About East Meadow, NY

About East Meadow, NY

Busy modern suburbs between the Wantagh and Meadowbrook state parkways

When East Meadow got its name in the 18th century, the then-agrarian hamlet’s chief inhabitants were woolly. Herds of sheep bleated over sweeping meadows, a major boon for the nation’s early textile makers. While grassy is still a fair descriptor for the community, grazing fields are no longer in vogue. Instead, mowed lawns front single-family homes on gridded, suburban streets, and destination parks feature sprawling turf fields with outfield lines and cricket-pitch boundaries. Packed as it is with busy commercial districts, high-speed commuter highways and musically inclined, highly rated public schools, East Meadow is far from a quiet farmers’ village in the 21st century. The tranquility it offers its modern, nonruminant residents is that of Long Island suburbia, packing daily necessities between the vital commuter arteries of the Wantagh, Southern and Meadowbrook state parkways.

Commutes to New York City and the Nassau University Medical Center

While New York City is packed with commuter destinations, health-care workers may only need to head to the Nassau University Medical Center complex that sprawls along Hempstead Turnpike. Hofstra University's campus sprawls across either side of Hempstead Turnpike about two miles to the west. While Nassau Inter-County Express buses make stops along a couple of major roads, personal vehicles and commuter highways are the main mode of transit in East Meadow. Both the Wantagh and Meadowbrook state parkways run north to south on either side of the hamlet, opening access to major east-west connectors like the Southern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway on the roughly 30-mile drive to Manhattan. Some commuters head about 4 miles away to the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road Station, which offers a 50-minute train ride to Penn Station. John F. Kennedy International Airport is about 15 miles away.

Midcentury suburban blocks and sprawling new construction

Sidewalk-lined suburban blocks make up much of East Meadow, home to a blend of ranch-style, Minimal Traditional, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod-style homes that were built from the 1940s through the 1960s. New Traditional homes and their gable-packed roofs, however, have increasingly towered over nearby starter homes in recent years. There are also several townhouse-style condo communities, some of which are age-restricted, like The Seasons of East Meadow. “There’s been a ton of rebuilding because the market is so high over there,” says Andrew-Paul Ragusa, broker/owner of REMI Realty, who has specialized in markets from Brooklyn to Suffolk County for a decade. "All of Nassau County’s prices have been going up, but East Meadow has been going up very quickly in just the last few years. You have to be ready to buy. If there’s an open house on Saturday or Sunday, on Monday it’s sold.” The median single-family home price is $764,000, higher than the national median of $418,700 given by the National Association of Realtors.

Golfing, skating and cricket matches at Eisenhower Park

While smaller green spaces like Veterans Memorial Park and Senator Speno Memorial Park become busy with summertime swimmers and youth league games, they pale in comparison to Eisenhower Park, a massive recreation destination that sprawls across more than 900 acres. “Eisenhower Park has so much to do — ice skating and hockey rinks, picnic areas — you name it, and it’s there,” Ragusa says. Well-lit athletic fields and playground equipment sit between biking and walking trails and decorative landscaping. The lane-marked and diving-board-shadowed pool at the Nassau County Aquatic Center host races and competitions for local high schools, as well as free swims, lessons and fitness classes for members and leisure-pass holders. Adults tee off across three 18-hole golf courses, while a couple of miniature-golf courses cater to younger putters. For nearly two weeks in June 2024, a crowd of 35,000 fans roared as the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup played out in the park’s temporary stadium. While the grandstands have been dismantled, the cricket pitch remains open to amateur players.

Shopping and dining on Hempstead Turnpike

Strip-mall shopping plazas alternate with big box locations and fast-food restaurants along Hempstead Turnpike. On East Meadow Avenue, a sparser commercial district is populated by more local flavors, like the sesame-seed-crusted pizza pies at Pietro’s, where an umbrella-hung patio shades diners in the warmer months. Roosevelt Field’s extensive shopping mall offerings are only about 4 miles away. Synagogues, churches and masjids hold services throughout the hamlet.

Events at Eisenhower Park and the Nassau Coliseum

Eisenhower Park’s wide-open spaces make it a popular event venue, from Saturday-morning farmers markets running July through October to free summer concerts and movies at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is responsible for putting on more community-centric holiday events, including family-friendly trunk-or-treats and Easter-egg hunts at Veterans Memorial Park. Just west of East Meadow, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is one of the county’s most iconic venues, drawing massive crowds to events ranging from concerts and multiday trade shows to fiery, engine-revving monster-truck rallies.
