Suburban Neighborhood in East Providence, Rhode Island
Providence County 02914, 02916
Carpenters Corner is a unique suburb of East Providence, where two major commercial corridors meet and essentially divide the neighborhood into four quadrants. As a result, no matter which part of Carpenters Corner you live in, you’re equally close to the action – and there is plenty to do here. From playgrounds to art galleries to hip eateries, this neighborhood is clearly buzzing with activity.
“Home prices in neighborhoods like this are going to be comparatively higher, because they’re closer to downtown Providence,” says Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby’s International Realty in Westport. “But you do often get larger yards.”
Indeed, you may not find cottages in the $200,000s like in nearby Riverside, but there are several raised ranches and Colonials in the mid $400,000s to mid $500,000s. For example, you can find a three-bedroom raised ranch from 1975, on a fenced half acre yard for $440,000. The setting is certainly suburban, with well-kept lawns, driveways, mature shade trees and neighboring homes of a complimentary style. Or you can go even more vintage, with a Colonial home from 1900, complete with custom wood details inside. These too include a fenced yard, and prices start around $430,000.
Orlo Avenue Elementary sits on the west end and enrolls over 200 students in grades K-5. The school maintains a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1, helping Niche to give it a B in the teachers category and a B-minus overall. The student population increases at Edward Martin Middle, where 600 are enrolled in grades 6-8. With a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1, the school scored a B from Niche in the teachers category. The centrally located East Providence High is clearly at the top for enrollment numbers: over 1,500 attend for grades 9-12. With a 14 to 1 student-teacher ratio, the school managed to score a B-minus from Niche in the teachers category.
Abundant dining options exist, whether you go to Broadway, Pawtucket Avenue or Taunton Avenue. It could be an American diner or Brazilian steakhouse, you’re sure to find something that satisfies your tastebuds. Check out Portuguese cuisine at Riveria, where you can get a sirloin topped with a port wine and mushroom sauce. Even dining at home can be exciting here – Feast & Fettle treats you to chef-prepared dinners, like blackened salmon and beef stroganoff, delivered straight to your door. You can also check out Shaw’s supermarket and the Stop & Shop, where Pawtucket Avenue and Taunton Avenue intersect.
While you’re at this crossroads, swing by Heart Spot Art Center and Gallery, which serves the community with exhibits and classes exploring a wide range of artistic mediums, from pastel paints to markers. For outdoor recreation, there are a couple of large playgrounds in Carpenters Corner. Agawam Playground is a popular spot for the diverse activities it offers. Hop on a slide, or enjoy athletic facilities for basketball, softball and soccer. There’s even a wooded area that you can hike in. If you want to travel over to downtown Providence, Interstate 195 runs across the southern border of Carpenters Corner. Cross the Washington Bridge and be there in 10 minutes.
Carpenters Corner is the kind of suburb where you can always find something to explore.
