Charming Hamptons community with year-round quiet

Located at the edge of the Hamptons on Long Island’s South Fork, Quogue is notable not just for its beautiful beaches but for the peace and quiet it offers residents year-round. "It’s a hidden gem,” says Lauren Battista, a Realtor with Brown Harris Stevens and an active member of the Quogue community. “Quogue is a charming small community, but a lot of people don’t realize that and go to bigger villages like East Hampton.” Although Quogue does still get summer visitors, it remains quieter than the rest of the Hamptons even in the height of summer. For many, this adds to its charm. “It’s very peaceful,” says Jeannine Kowaleski, a Realtor at HomeSmart Premier Living Realty and Scala Properties who has been selling homes here for 10 years. “It has a really nice, small-town feel.” Quogue’s quiet atmosphere doesn’t mean it’s secluded, though. It’s just 3 miles from shopping and dining in Westhampton and 7 miles from Hampton Bays.

Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean and exploring Quogue Wildlife Refuge

“People want to be here for its exclusive beauty,” says Margot Reutter, a licensed real estate salesperson at The Corcoran Group who has lived in the area for over 15 years and has spent over a decade selling, designing and building homes in the area. “Quogue offers some of the world’s most beautiful ocean beaches.” Quogue Village Beach is often dotted with the towels and umbrellas of swimmers, surfers and sunbathers during the summer, and it’s a good spot for whale watching or stargazing. “Quogue has two private beach clubs,” Kowaleski says. “That’s a lot of the main draw when people are looking for a house in Quogue; a lot of times they’ll say, ‘I specifically want to get the beach passes.’” Those who live outside the village in East Quogue gravitate toward public beaches like Squires Beach. East Quogue Park is popular for its playground and free summer concerts, while Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a favorite spot to explore nature on land. Situated on 305 acres, the refuge is home to animals that can’t be returned to the wild, including hawks, owls and eagles, and has a nature center with even more animals like turtles. “I take my grandson there all the time,” Kowaleski says, adding that the refuge also has 7 miles of trails. These trails weave through forests and skirt the edges of ponds, and the main trail is wheelchair and stroller-friendly. “A lot of people go there to run,” she says.

Two distinct neighborhoods with similar housing styles

Quogue contains two distinct neighborhoods: the Village of Quogue and the unincorporated hamlet of East Quogue. While the two neighborhoods vary in terms of price, they contain similar housing styles. “These are classic Hampton homes with big front porches and shingled exteriors,” Battista says. Large colonials without wood shingles are also common, as are ranch-style and 1980s contemporary-style homes. Homes in the Village of Quogue are usually on an acre or more, and three-bedroom homes that could use a little updating start at around $1.2 million, while waterfront seven-bedroom homes with private amenities like a pool or tennis court can climb to $15 million. In East Quogue, three-bedroom ranch-style homes with half-acre lots that need a little updating start at around $825,000, while updated four-bedroom homes on nearly an acre with private pools or tennis courts climb to $2.5 million. East Quogue is also home to Shinnecock Shores, a private gated community along the shores of Shinnecock Bay where eight-bedroom waterfront homes on 2 acres can climb to $8.5 million. Although home prices can be high, Battista and Kowaleski say the taxes are a plus for many residents. “We have one of the lowest real estate taxes in Long Island because of the area’s small school district,” Battista says. The CAP Index crime score is 3 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Quogue beach party, annual charity gala

The Village of Quogue holds several annual events, including the Village Beach Party, which is held each August at the Quogue Village Beach. The party celebrates the end of summer and features local food trucks, a beach bonfire and live music. “There’s always events at the wildlife refuge,” Kowaleski says. “They have an annual gala there to raise money.” The gala features hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a silent auction as well as live music and the chance to meet a few of the resident animals.

Dining and shopping on Jessup Avenue and Montauk Highway

In the village, Jessup Avenue is home to a handful of local spots. Beth’s Café is a favorite seasonal brunch restaurant open during the summer and The Hampton Theatre Company offers local plays all year long. Little shops like a florist and the family-owned Schmidt’s Country Market, which has been a go-to spot for groceries and deli items for over 40 years, also line the street. In East Quogue, Montauk Highway is also dotted with restaurants, from sandwiches at Olga’s Deli to fine dining at Stone Creek Inn. Just 3 miles away, Westhampton Beach offers even more shopping and dining options. “There are so many options for great food; I’m a foodie so this is important to me,” Reutter says. “My favorite new spot is Ivy on Main in Westhampton Beach. My favorite legacy spot is the Patio.” For more groceries, there’s also a Lidl in the nearby town.

Major highways and LIRR to New York City or Montauk

Quogue is about 87 miles north of New York City and close to major thoroughfares like Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway, also known as State Route 27. Residents are also 5 miles from Westhampton Station along the Long Island Railroad. Trains from here reach Montauk in about an hour and Manhattan in just over 2 hours. “Quogue offers a simple and exclusive way to enjoy all the Hamptons has to offer while being close enough to New York, so you don’t have to battle traffic or huge crowds.” For longer trips, the local Francis S. Gabreski Airport is on the neighborhood’s eastern edge.
