East Compton, also known as East Rancho Dominguez, is an accessible and relatively affordable neighborhood about eight miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Realtor Matt Tilley with First Team Real Estate, known by many as the British Bloke, notes that homes in this area are often at a good price point for first-time homebuyers. "It's relatively affordable and there's good access to surrounding areas." Here you will find 1940s and 1950s bungalows and Spanish-style homes set on modest, well-manicured lawns. Although many homes have garages, you will see a lot of street parking. For about $600,000, you can get a 1950s bungalow with stucco siding and an iron gate entrance. For $685,000, you will find traditional-style homes originally built in the 1940s that have been completely remodeled. You’ll also see some two-story bungalows priced around $700,000 and remodeled ranch-style homes that are going for about $715,000.

Students here are served by the Compton Unified School District, a system with improved student achievement and a graduation rate that is approaching 90 percent. The district has also implemented a STEM focus throughout all of its schools. Roosevelt Elementary School, for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, offers a grant-funded program through which students can receive tutoring services, project-based enrichment and homework assistance. At Dominguez High School, students can select from a full range of academic options that includes Advanced Placement courses and career and technology education classes. The school’s well-rounded educational experience also includes extracurricular activities such as engineering and robotics clubs and a competitive cheer squad.

In the heart of the neighborhood, you’ll find East Rancho Dominguez Park, a busy, five-acre space that is best known for where Venus and Serena Williams learned to play tennis. Here you can work on your own backhand smashes, watch the kids explore the playground or have a picnic lunch. This Los Angeles County Park, which features a community center with a gym, pool tables, and computer lab, is also the site of a holiday tree lighting and several other annual events.

When it comes to food options, East Compton offers quite the spread. You can choose from a variety of brick-and-mortar restaurants and food trucks that serve sushi, tacos and desserts. Start your day with a strong cup of coffee and delicious pastries from Mr. Phat Donut House where customers appreciate the donuts and the shop owner’s friendly service. Kitchen’s Corner BBQ is the area’s go-to spot for ribs, brisket and macaroni and cheese. Locals will tell you that it’s the best place for barbecue in southern California and the long line is worth the wait. You can also grab churros and fried Oreos from Dulce Canella and tacos from Tacos El Culichi.

East Compton residents have several nearby options for grocery shopping including La Mexicana Meat Market, a small store known for its fresh produce and meats. Northgate Market is another well stocked store that sells authentic Mexican prepared foods and products.

Residents here can easily access the 710 and the 105, and subway service via Compton station is a short drive away. If you’re looking for a convenient community not too far from downtown Los Angeles with relatively affordable homes, this might be the ideal neighborhood for you.
