Shopping, dining and a little intrigue
Very few neighborhoods can claim to be home to both waterfront views and a historic spy ring, but Setauket-East Setauket is certainly one of them. Once the center of the Culper Spy Ring, a famous Revolutionary War group that gave General George Washington himself information about British troops and their plans and played a vital role in the American victory, Setauket-East Setauket bears signs of its past nearly everywhere. “It’s such a great community with so much history and beauty in it,” says Gina Amen, an ABR/PSA licensed real estate associate broker at American Real Estate Associates who has lived in the Three Villages area for over 30 years and has sold homes here for 27 years. “It just shows a lot of charm and character in the community. Many of the structures survived and are still intact.”
Today, the neighborhood consists of two distinct areas: Setauket and East Setauket. “Setauket is the smaller community that offers water views of Setauket Harbor, Port Jefferson Harbor and Little Bay,” Amen says. “Those are obviously quieter areas. East Setauket is more of the landlocked area where they have shopping and restaurants.”
The Culper Spy Ring in Setauket-East Setauket was present at this location in the 1700's.

Surrounded by Revolutionary War-era history
Historic buildings and sites are scattered throughout Setauket-East Setauket. A walking tour designed by the Three Village Historic Society visits sites that played a role in the spy ring, including the Setauket Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1674, and the Brewster House, which dates back to 1665. Although the house of the ring’s main spy burned down in the 1800s, there’s now a marker where it used to stand. There’s more than just walking tours, though. “There’s the Tri-Spy tours, where you can go biking, hiking or kayaking with stories about George Washington and the spy ring,” Amen says.

Kayaking and swimming, Cedar Beach
“I love the beautiful shorelines that Setauket offers, the spectacular views and beaches,” Amen says. “We take our canoes and kayaks out, which is a lot of fun to do.” Frank Melville Memorial Park has a nature preserve with a pond, making it a popular spot for birdwatching, going on a picnic or taking dogs for a walk, and Laurel Ridge Setauket Woods Nature Preserve has miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers to enjoy. Shore Road Marina is in the neighborhood, and Cedar Beach is one of the many nearby beaches. Just 8 miles away, it offers a nature preserve alongside swimming, fishing on the pier and live music during the summer.

Shopping and dining along North Country Road
Most of Setauket-East Setauket’s shops and restaurants are stretched along North Country Road, an arrangement that Karen Roth, a licensed associate broker at RE/MAX Integrity Leaders, says is a major plus for many locals because it keeps the residential parts of the neighborhood quieter. Se-port Delicatessen has been one of the area’s most popular restaurants for over 30 years. “It was on the Travel Channel,” Amen says. “It’s a great place where you can eat inside or outside, and it’s just a fun place to go.” Across the street, Elaine’s Restaurant & Bar is a new spot on the rise, and the nearby Chico’s Tex Mex is popular for its empanadas and quesadillas. Madiran The Wine Bar is also a popular spot to meet friends for drinks, a light meal and live music. A few big box stores are found in the neighborhood, including a Kohl’s at its southern edge. Stop & Shop and Walmart offer groceries close to home.

Historic, candle-lit tours, summer concerts
“The Three Village Historical Society offers annual candlelight tours of the houses in December,” Amen says. Frank Melville Memorial Park in Setauket hosts an evening music series throughout the summer called Wind Down Sundays. At the Bates House, which is a popular events venue, residents can sign up for yoga, meditation classes and writing workshops.
Inland fixer-uppers starting at $550,000
“You have a nice mix of older and very high-end homes,” Roth says. Colonials are plentiful here, but ranch-style homes are also common and there are even a few 1980s contemporary-style homes. Fixer-uppers start around $550,000, but updated four- or five-bedroom homes can easily climb past $1 million to $1.3 million even without waterfront access. Homes on or very near the water can start at around $800,000, but their max price is much higher, with an updated seven-bedroom waterfront home costing up to $4.25 million. According to Amen, prices have been on the rise for the last three years — and promise to continue on that upward trend. The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10. The national average is 4.
