Built for memories and slow living
Edgefield is a quintessential small town built for slow living and preserving memories. "Our archives are some of the few that have never been burned or flooded. People come from all over to research their genealogy. Some fall in love with the town and stay here," says Summers Pendarvis, a Real Estate Agent with Weichert Realtors born and raised in Edgefield. Known for its peach farms, Edgefield has been the home of 10 governors. Its first tavern was erected in 1787, and its downtown historical markers tell the story of famous duals and tragic endings.
The Edgefield Town Square provides a great spot for relaxing and community events.
Ties to the national monument in DC
The story of Edgefield begins in a vast wilderness of virgin forests, prairies and shimmering rivers. Many of its earliest residents fought in the Revolutionary War, but the land's first people were the Cherokee. Over time, Edgefield became a center of politics, with many lawyers living in the area who often settled personal matters with firearms. Adding even more depth to the town's history, Robert Mills, the designer of the national monument in DC, built Edgefield's downtown area.
Large colonial homes can be found dotted throughout the bungalows of Edgefield county.
Homes with a story
Edgefield's architecture comprises colonials, modern farmhouses, cottages, and ranch-style homes. "Higher-end homes priced at about a million dollars take longer, but homes in the $150,000 to $250,000 range move quickly," Pendarvis says. Properties here have been built in stages, given the town has a long history. "In the mid-2000s, everyone stopped building, but we are seeing some new custom builds." Though the median build year is 1971 in Edgefield, the oldest home on the market was built in 1780 and even has its own Wikipedia page. The first house in Edgefield was built in 1762 but no longer stands. Homes typically sell within 49 days and the average sale price is around $300,000.

Farm to table cuisine
Edgefield maintains a small-town charm, with most major shopping 30 miles away in bigger towns like Aiken and Augusta. "No one has brought a shopping mall in. One area has a Bojangles, Mcdonalds and a Dollar General, but it's not right in town. I hope it stays this way in Edgefield," Pendarvis says. Downtown, with its central green square and historic courthouse, is Edgefield's main shopping hub with small boutiques and local restaurants. The Old Edgefield Grille offers a 5-star ambiance inside a Victorian home built in 1906. Carolina Moon is a popular micro-distillery. Christine's Farm to Fork, one of downtown's newest additions, is a classic farm-to-table. For retail, August House sells small gifts and home decor. For groceries, KJ's Market is 2 miles away in Carolina Square.
Healthy schools for thriving kids
The Edgefield County School District serves students of Edgefield. One complete pipeline is W.E. Parker Elementary School, Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School and Strom Thurmond High School. All are rated B minus by Niche. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation designated the elementary school as one of America's healthiest schools in 2023.
Museums are plenty
Locals and tourists can visit the Oakley Park Museum on Colombia Road to watch reenactments that showcase the stories of Edgefield's earliest residents. The Discovery Center on Main Street houses exhibits that detail Edgefield's heritage, including early farming tools in glass cases. Both of these places are stops along the town's guided historical tours. Another is Willowbrook Cemetery, where many of Edgefield's earliest families are buried.
The Magnolia Dale House Museum in Edgefield showcases furnishings and artifacts in an 1843 home.

Places to paddle and golf
The 36-acre Slade Lake off Planer Road is a quiet spot for general relaxation, fishing and paddling in small boats. Slade Lake's public pier and boat ramp are near the start of Ten Governors Rail Trail, which curves around the lake for 0.9 miles. Edgefield Park on Evan's Street has public sports fields, a large playground and a picnic area. Pine Ridge Country Club is nestled on Pine Ridge Road when neighbors want to play golf. The 700-acre Palmetto Shooting Complex on Gary Hill Road offers shooting instruction for new hunters and hosts hiking and kayaking adventures.
Slade Lake offers relaxation around a serene lake in Edgefield.
Edgefield county is rural, with predominantly large tracts of land.
The Ten Governors Rail Trail runs from Slade Lake to Piedmont Technical College Edgefield.

Near and far
If someone lives downtown, they may be able to walk to shops, but overall, having a car is important here as there are no public buses. "You're only 30 minutes to a Costco, Walmart and Interstate 2, and it's a half hour to Charlotte Airport," Pendarvis says. Aiken Regional Airport is around 12 miles from Edgefield via Route 19. Doctors Hospital of Augusta is 29 miles away along Interstate 20.
