‘More space to breathe’ in West Edina
In the summer, youth baseball teams load the bases at Countryside Park. The ice rink is typically flooded and frozen in mid-December, and parents push their kids on the playground swingset. The surrounding West Edina neighborhood, which shares its name—Countryside—with this 9-acre park, has remained more or less the same for the past 50 years. And folks tend to stick around Countryside, even after their kids are grown and gone. Here, gently sloped streets are lined with mid-century homes, the occasional small church and oak trees that shed their colorful leaves come fall. John McWhite, a Coldwell Banker agent with more than a decade of experience, says it’s the large lot sizes that set this neighborhood apart. “There’s more room here than in other parts of town, and homebuyers like that it feels a little rural,” he says. Adding “A lot of people who move here are excited about the bigger yards. It’s just nice to have more space to breathe.” Highways 62 (aka Crosstown Highway) and 100 are less than a mile away, meaning “It’s easy to get from point A to point B, so you don’t have to sacrifice being close to everything in favor of that space” says McWhite. Minneapolis is about 11 miles north, and Saint Paul is 20 miles east past the Twin Cities’ international airport and the Mall of America. It takes 5 minutes to get to grocery stores and Caribou Coffee drive-thrus, and there are quite a few regulars at The Hilltop, a neighborhood bar that can sometimes feel like the set of “Cheers,” according to local Realtor Amy Deckas. Countryside is quintessential Edina: quiet suburbia on the outskirts of metropolitan convenience.
Mid-century homes on larger-than-average lots
According to McWhite, “There are parts of Edina where homeowners aren’t allowed to build garages onto their house or change anything about the exterior of the home because they’re historic, but in Countryside, you have a lot of freedom to do whatever you like, which people love.” Although prospective buyers will find townhouses for between $275,000 and $450,000 in areas like Nine Mile Village, a gated community near Bredesen Park that tends to attract snowbirds, Countryside is mostly single-family homes. Ranch-styles and split-levels built between the 1950s and ‘70s are most common, but there are also a few older cottages and Tudor-inspired properties here too, and sale prices generally hover between $550,000 and $800,000. As McWhite points out, "The median price here is about $700,000, which is just very slightly over the median for the city.” There’s also a smattering of newer builds across Countryside, large traditional homes with steep gabled roofs that range in price from approximately $1.2 to $1.8 million. In some cases, they can even surpass $2 million. Most lot sizes are well over a quarter acre, and homes here sell more than three weeks faster than the national average of 43 days.

Over 80% of high school graduates attend four-year universities
Edina’s public schools rank among Minnesota’s top five districts according to the educational review site, Niche. Starting in kindergarten, students head to the A-rated Countryside Elementary before moving on to Valley View Middle and Edina High, both of which earn A-plus grades. The neighborhood’s CAP score is a 1 out of 10 on all fronts, well below the national average and many parents feel comfortable letting kids ride their bikes to school or walk to the playground with friends. Over 80% of EHS graduates attend 4-year colleges, the majority of which are out of state. After-school activities include the award-winning robotics team, The Green Machine, debate and Latin club. There’s programming built into the day for multi-lingual learners and qualified students participate in independent studies and concurrent enrollment at local universities.
Valley View Middle School earned an A+ overall grade from Niche.
Edina High School is ranked the #5 best high school in MN.

Hockey in the winter and golf in the summer
Along with the neighborhood’s namesake park, there are paved walking paths and pickleball courts at Yancey Park and a small playground at Birchcrest Park. Bredesen Park spans over 200 acres at Countryside’s westernmost border, where a trail system surrounds Mud Lake and Everett Pond, and fishermen stand on the banks hoping to hook a largemouth bass or two. According to Chad Eckert, who’s worked with Edina Realty, Inc. for the past decade and grew up in the city, most parks—including Countryside—have their own warming houses where skaters lace up before hitting the ice. Minnesotans take snowblowers out onto the lakes in the winter to clear space for boot hockey, and some ponds are surrounded by “gigantic lights” during the holiday season, according to Eckert. There’s also Braemar Golf Course, open to the public and home to a heated dome. “It’s about 70 yards long, so you have enough room to see your ball fly,” says Eckert, adding, “In winter you swing a hockey stick, and in the summer, golf club. We have the highest number of golfers per capita.”

Shopping malls, Eden Prairie Center and 50th & France Street Shopping
Two malls, Southdale Center and The Galleria, are within about 3 miles of Countryside. “Southdale is great for everyday shopping. That’s where you’ll find Macy’s and Banana Republic. And Galleria is a little more high-end, with Tiffany and Louis Vuitton and those types of stores,” says McWhite. Eckert agrees. “Southdale was the first ever indoor mall in the country. If you want to shop here in the winter, you need an indoor mall.” For groceries, most Countrysiders will head to Jerry’s Foods off Vernon Avenue; Eckert remembers working here in high school. Starling is a relatively new upscale eatery nearby, and menu items include chicken yakisoba and green curry walleye. Edina doesn’t have many fast food chains, but there are stops like McDonalds and Chick-fil-A next to big box retailers like Walmart in Eden Prairie, 5 miles away. Eckert also points to Edina’s 50th & France Street shopping district, where warm weather means music and patio dining. Gourmet burgers are topped with candied bacon at Red Cow, a local favorite, and there’s also Cocina del Barrio, where groups of friends chat over tapas and cocktails. D’Amico & Sons is a go-to for Italian dishes across the street from the historic Edina Mann Theatre, which first started showing movies in the mid-1930s.

Fourth of July fireworks in Rosland Park
On the Fourth of July, families head to Rosland Park for a city-sponsored firework show over Lake Cornelia. Nearby, The Edina Art Center hosts summer camps and intensive classes in subjects like figure drawing and print-making, and vendors sell everything from handmade jewelry to birdhouses at the Edina Art Fair in early summer, an event that’s been going strong on 50th Street since the 1960s. Centennial Lakes Park—about 4 miles from Countryside—hosts outdoor concerts in June, July and August; a Winter Ice Festival in January; and a farmers market on Thursday nights throughout the summer and early fall. Families can also rent out swan boats to paddle out on the water and, afterward, head to Pinstripes for bowling and bocce.
An escape from city noise, medical care and an international airport
“One of the best parts about Edina is that it’s far enough away from downtown that you don’t get the city noise,” says Eckert, adding that there’s even a sound wall going up next to the Crosstown Highway, where commuter traffic tends to back up during rush hour. Because Metro Transit buses don’t stop within the neighborhood, most residents rely on their own cars to travel into the city. Medical care is found less than 10 minutes away at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, and there’s also Methodist Hospital to the north in St. Louis Park past Meadowbrook Golf Course. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport offers direct flights to dozens of locations within the continental United States and beyond, and hundreds of planes take off daily next to Fort Snelling State Park and the Mississippi River.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
