Small neighborhood ice rinks in the shadow of the Twin Cities
When the weather drops below freezing in Normandale Park, an established Edina neighborhood on the outskirts of the Twin Cities, skaters lace up for pick-up hockey games. In some cases, kids learn how to skate almost as soon as they learn to walk, and Edina High School's varsity team — the Hornets — is no stranger to state championship wins. "In some parks, they open up the fire hydrants and spray. Depending on the park, the whole thing's flooded and you can make it a rink. Most of the winter, I would say, there is a mix between playing boot hockey and skating hockey," says Chad Eckert of Edina Realty, who grew up in the city. The sound of sticks hitting the ice interrupts snow-covered silences in Normandale Park, and summer means fishing on the banks of Lake Cornelia or heading to the pirate ship-themed swimming pool in Rosland Park. Bordering the neighborhood to the north, Highway 62 (also known as the Crosstown Highway) connects commuters to Saint Paul, and Highway 100 serves as a direct route to Minneapolis museums and stadiums. Although wooded streets and single-story ranch-styles look like something out of a 1960s family sitcom, white picket fences and all, glass skyscrapers are just 10 miles — 20 minutes — away.
Mid-century homes and a 'nature feel' in West Edina
West Edina neighborhoods are known for their large lot sizes, according to Eckert. "[Edina is] divided by Highway 100," he says. "East is smaller, flatter" compared to the hills, trees and "nature feel" in West Edina neighborhoods like Normandale Park. Yards average over ¼ acre, and some homes sit on ½ acre or more. Ranch-styles, split-levels and cottages dating back to the 1950s and '60s can start around $400,000 and reach close to $700,000. Ash and Oak trees offer shade, and lilac bushes bloom purple in the spring, bordering two-car garages and backyard swingsets. Friends walk their dogs side by side down quiet streets, and the neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score sits at a 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

A top-rated public school system and Edina Rotary Global Scholars
Edina's school system—the fourth best in Minnesota, according to the educational review site Niche—attracts young families searching for top-rated public education. Kindergarteners start off at Creek Valley Elementary and go on to attend Valley View Middle and Edina High. All three schools have A-plus grades from Niche, and on snow days, sledders head to the hills outside Creek Valley. At EHS, students can choose between world languages like Spanish, Latin, French, Chinese and ASL, and the school also has an extensive Engineering and Computer Science Department. Courses include aerospace engineering and web page coding. There are STEM, Fine Arts and Humanities pathways through the Edina Rotary Global Scholar Program, and juniors and seniors finish the experience with research-based Capstone courses.
Creek Valley Elementary School is a public institution.
Valley View Middle School earned an A+ overall grade from Niche.
Edina High School is ranked the #5 best high school in MN.

Boardwalks and pirate ships in local parks
Along with the neighborhood's namesake park, which extends 10 acres and features a playground, tennis courts, picnic areas and a seasonal skating rink, there's also Heights Park, which is intersected by a network of boardwalks and paved pathways known as the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail. Lake Cornelia and Rosland Park are about a mile from the neighborhood along West 66th Street, and locals stop by for a firework over the water on the Fourth of July. Rosland Park's disc golf course attracts families on weekends, and the pedestrian bridge over Crosstown Highway connects pickleball courts to northern Edina neighborhoods. There are twisting water slides, a zip line and a surf simulator at the Edina Aquatic Center, where climbing structures are modeled to look like pirate ships. Adults, meanwhile, can practice butterfly and breaststrokes in the Edinborough Park indoor pool. According to Eckert, golf and hockey are equally important in Edina. Braemar Golf Course, a 3-mile drive from Normandale Park, is open to the public, and the Edina Country Club is a prestigious private option dating back to the early 1920s.

Art and tech classes open to the public; activity near 50th & France
Teens and adults can enroll in figure drawing or oil painting classes at the Edina Art Center, found at Rosland Park's westernmost border. The center expects to move locations by 2027. Others head to the Edina Public Library for tech help or classes on navigating Medicare, and the 50th & France Shopping District hosts events like "Dancing in the Plaza," portable pettings zoos and a tree lighting ceremony on the weekend after Thanksgiving. There's also the Edina Art Fair, which attracts close to 300,000 visitors over the span of three days and marks the beginning of the city's summer season. Warm weather celebrations continue throughout June, July and August in Centennial Lakes Park, and folks pack concert night picnics to enjoy at the outdoor amphitheater.

Two miles to groceries, large-scale shopping centers and upscale eateries
Drive 2 miles north to pick up groceries at Jerry's Foods. "It's a very well-known brand in Edina, and I worked there as a bag boy in the early '90s," says Eckert. Stop by the Caribou Coffee drive-thru on the way to work, or head to Starling on special occasions. The restaurant opened to much fanfare in 2024, and dishes like pork belly tacos are served in a garden-like interior. Drive 5 minutes to find large-scale shopping destinations like Southdale Center — an indoor mall built in the 1950s to combat Minnesota's cold winters — and The Galleria, home to luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and COACH. In the summer, Eckert says the 50th & France district has the vibe of a much larger city. "All of a sudden, things are jam-packed. There's outdoor seating, and the music is loud." Popular eateries include D'Amico & Sons for chicken parmesan and homemade lasagna and Edina Grill, where friends meet up for brunch on weekend mornings.
Southdale Center is a large shopping mall with a Lifetime Fitness and a Kowalski's Grocery.

Proximity to major highways and Twin City commutes in a half-hour or less
Public transit is limited in Normandale Park, and most residents rely on their own cars to commute into the Twin Cities. Highway 100 and Interstate 394 lead to downtown Minneapolis, about 11 miles — or 20 minutes — away, and drivers can merge onto Highway 62, passing by M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital on the way into Saint Paul. According to Eckert, sound barriers are in the works along Crosstown. For long-distance travel within the country and across the pond, head to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The facility is bordered by attractions like the Mall of America and Fort Snelling State Park, where 18 miles of hiking trails wind alongside the Minnesota River and Long Meadow Lake.
