Aptly named for its wealth of white oak trees, White Oaks is a small suburban community in the northwest quadrant of Edina. It's bordered on the east by France Avenue, and at its southern end is the active 50th and France area, which features a wealth of retail and dining options. The 40 acres of land that comprises the neighborhood was originally part of the Baird Farm. Some of the area's oak trees date back 150 years or more.
In the White Oaks neighborhood, you'll find Craftsman-style, Tudor-revival, Colonial-revival, and stylized ranch-style homes. Meanwhile, the 50th and France area is more a part of downtown Edina, offering condominiums. The 5000 French Condominiums are part of an upscale, mixed-use development. Three levels of high-end condos sit above one level of retail space with unique boutiques and fine restaurants. Brick and cast stone give the building a classic, elegant look. The Lanterns of Edina is another condo building, built in the 1970s, that sits just south of Lund's Grocery. There's also the Henley Condos, which were built in 1994. 5000 France is the newest development, with construction ending in 2006. Home prices in the area range from $535,000 to $1.85 million.
Children in the area attend Normandale Elementary School, a French immersion school. The school provides a personalized learning experience, offering a maker space, school garden, service projects and student leadership to engage students. The school has an overall Niche grade of A and is ranked as Minnesota's number 19 best public elementary school. Next, kids attend South View Middle School, which offers a challenging learning environment emphasizing exploratory learning and team-teaching structures. The school has a variety of activities available for students, including robotics, theater, sports and after-school programming. The school has an overall Niche grade of A and is ranked as Minnesota's number eight best public middle school. Teenagers attend Edina Senior High School, which has an A-plus overall Niche grade and is ranked as Minnesota's number four best public high school.
Locals can get a slice of the outdoors at Robert J. Kojetin Park, a pocket park offering a playground and benches. Athletes flock to Pershing Park, full of various sports facilities. Here, you'll find a baseball field, basketball court, little free library, playground, soccer field, tennis court, wading pool and walking path. Minnehaha Creek flows through Arden Park, just south of the neighborhood. Local anglers fish along the creek, while adventurous residents paddle or go tubing along its banks and in the wintertime, the park's ice-skating rink is open. Residents can take in the park's natural beauty along its walking trails.
When residents get hungry, there are several great places to eat in the 50th and France area. Raku is a popular Japanese restaurant in the area serving sushi, udon noodles and gyoza. Raku also serves several western and fusion entrees like grilled lamb chops with goat cheese and a crab-topped salmon dressed with a wasabi, sake and soy sauce blend. For those craving Italian food, D'Amico & Sons comes in clutch. Groceries and other household essentials are easily grabbed at the neighborhood Lunds & Byerlys. If you enjoy suburban living just a stone's throw from downtown conveniences, White Oaks and the 50th and France area may be worth a look.
