High-flying community centered around excellent schools
How did a neighborhood in Edmond — a suburb north of Oklahoma City — earn an unusual name like “Kickingbird”? The origins trace back to the 19th century when a newspaper editor named Milton Reynolds used the high-flying moniker as a pen name. Kicking Bird was also the name of one of Reynolds' close friends, a Kiowa chief. The city would eventually use some of the Reynolds' family land to develop a golf course named in Milton’s honor. The Kickingbird Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Edmond and is recognized as one of the best public courses in Oklahoma, but it’s only one reason to consider a move to the area. “The schools are why we bought here,” says Lauren Sargeant, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elite. “And we have everything we need in Edmond, so there’s no reason to go to Oklahoma City.”

Hitting the links at Kickingbird Golf Course
The golf course that gives the neighborhood its name is also the jewel in its crown. The flow of the 18-hole public course allows golfers to cycle back toward the clubhouse around the midway point. Other facilities include a putting green, pro shop and driving range. The Lookout is an onsite restaurant serving breakfast and pub-style fare like sandwiches and wings. “The Lookout has giant windows so you can see out to the course,” Sargeant says. Less than a quarter mile from Kickingbird Golf Course, Icon Cinema screens the latest flicks. The shaded walking trail at nearby Fair Cloud Park weaves past a basketball court and playground in a quiet residential area.

Edmond-North High School, home of the Huskies
Students with Kickingbird addresses benefit from Edmond’s highly rated school system. Northern Hills Elementary has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School, and Sequoyah Middle School offers engaging electives like drama, engineering and world leadership. During Edmond-North High School’s BALTO (Bring A Light To Others) Week, students organize events and activities to raise money for a designated charitable cause. The acronym pays homage to the famed Siberian husky that helped deliver medical supplies to Nome, Alaska, during the diphtheria epidemic of 1925 — a fitting tribute, given that the husky is Edmond-North’s school mascot. All three schools are a short drive from the neighborhood and earn a Niche grade of A. Also nearby is the University of Central Oklahoma, a major area employer serving 12,000 students.
Younger students may attend Northern Hills Elementary.

Houses with stylish brick and stone exteriors peek out from wooded front yards on Kickingbird’s curved streets and cul-de-sacs. Gabled roof accents and attached garages are standard features, and most lots measure at least a half-acre. In-ground swimming pools with patios offer luxurious touches to many homes. Paved, level sidewalks make it easy to stroll to the neighbor’s house or take the dog for an evening walk. Prices trend higher than the national median of $416,000 and exceptionally high for Oklahoma City, though homes tend to sell within a month of going up for sale. Buyers can expect to spend $375,000 to $600,000 for a modest-sized ranch-style or split-level house, while large modern custom builds run $1 million to $2 million.
