On the outskirts of Kingston, Edwardsville is a suburban borough across the Susquehanna River from the city of Wilkes-Barre. “Home prices here are a lot cheaper than in New York City and New Jersey, and our taxes are also cheaper,” says Casey Johnston, a Realtor with RPA Real Estate. “We’ve seen an enormous amount of people coming in from neighboring cities,” Johnston says. The uptick in new people moving in, following several decades of population decline, has driven the average home price in the area up, a trend that could continue as new businesses come. “We’ve also had some new warehouses come to the area for companies such as Amazon, Adidas and True Value. So, there’s a lot of those jobs available,” Johnston says.

Densely packed

Edwardsville’s residents live in housing tracts with Colonial-style, single-family homes and duplexes from the early 1900s and midcentury period. The large homes sit side by side with other large homes on lots barely large enough to accommodate them. Blocks are densely populated with the pattern of large homes on not-so-large lots block after block. The median price for a single-family home is about $105,000.

You pick the pizza, you pick the pub

The residential area is next to a large shopping center with a Market 32 grocery store, Lowe’s, Petco and other national retailers and fast-food franchises. A few local businesses are also located in the mini-mall shopping centers, but the borough’s Main Street corridor and Wyoming Avenue in neighboring Kingston provide a more local experience with pizzerias, hoagie shops and neighborhood pubs. Upscale restaurants and other businesses are also nearby in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Less than a mile from Edwardsville, people often wait in line to get a seat at Sweet Treet, a beloved cash-only breakfast and lunch counter on Wyoming Avenue. Tucked in the corner of United Penn Plaza across the street, Bistro on the Avenue offers an upscale dining experience with refreshing cocktails and entrees.

This town has potential. There is cheap housing, and is close to shopping and downtown area in Wilkes-barre, Pa. There are things to do in surrounding areas like the kielbasa festival.
