On the outskirts of Kingston, Edwardsville is a suburban borough across the Susquehanna River from the city of Wilkes-Barre. “Home prices here are a lot cheaper than in New York City and New Jersey, and our taxes are also cheaper,” says Casey Johnston, a Realtor with RPA Real Estate. “We’ve seen an enormous amount of people coming in from neighboring cities,” Johnston says. The uptick in new people moving in, following several decades of population decline, has driven the average home price in the area up, a trend that could continue as new businesses come. “We’ve also had some new warehouses come to the area for companies such as Amazon, Adidas and True Value. So, there’s a lot of those jobs available,” Johnston says.

Densely packed
Edwardsville’s residents live in housing tracts with Colonial-style, single-family homes and duplexes from the early 1900s and midcentury period. The large homes sit side by side with other large homes on lots barely large enough to accommodate them. Blocks are densely populated with the pattern of large homes on not-so-large lots block after block. The median price for a single-family home is about $105,000.
Driving is most popular
For the most part, people here drive to get places. Although, Luzerne County Transportation Authority (LCTA) operates buses with limited service for Edwardsville. Travel time to nearby Wilkes-Barre or Kingston tend toward the shorter side, generally 5 to 15 minutes. The main roads and highways are State Route 309, Route 315 and the Cross Valley Expressway.
You pick the pizza, you pick the pub
The residential area is next to a large shopping center with a Market 32 grocery store, Lowe’s, Petco and other national retailers and fast-food franchises. A few local businesses are also located in the mini-mall shopping centers, but the borough’s Main Street corridor and Wyoming Avenue in neighboring Kingston provide a more local experience with pizzerias, hoagie shops and neighborhood pubs. Upscale restaurants and other businesses are also nearby in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Less than a mile from Edwardsville, people often wait in line to get a seat at Sweet Treet, a beloved cash-only breakfast and lunch counter on Wyoming Avenue. Tucked in the corner of United Penn Plaza across the street, Bistro on the Avenue offers an upscale dining experience with refreshing cocktails and entrees.
Chomping at the Nesbitt
Visitors can spend hours relaxing by the river at Nesbitt Park, where they can jog or launch a boat. Anyone up for a challenge can try hitting an Eagle or Boogie with a frisbee at the park’s disc golf course. The park’s trails connect to Kirby Park, a public green space with a pond and sports facilities. Kirby is one of the area’s premier gathering places, as locals regularly gather for festivals celebrating holidays and everything that makes the community great.
Wyoming Valley West District
Students here attend State Street Larkesville Elementary, which Niche rates C, Solomon/Plains Junior High School, which Niche rates C-minus and Wyoming Valley West Senior High School, which Niche rates B. The schools are in Wyoming Valley West School District, which Niche rates B-minus.

The Freidman keeps kids fit
Kids in the borough are involved in youth sports through various organizations, including the Freidman Jewish Community Center. The Freidman Center invites people of all faiths and backgrounds to visit its fitness center, which includes facilities for multiple sports. The center also manages adult offers adult exercise programs and summer day camps.
