An exurb that contrasts farmland with denser developments
Chesterfield Township is such an elongated exurb in New Jersey that its neighbors to the north and south are a study in contrasts. To the north are Yardville, White Horse and Hamilton Township – sprawling suburban localities marked by a dense web of streets, about 11 miles from Trenton. But to the south are Springfield and North Hanover, which are decidedly more rural in character. Chesterfield Township thus represents an in-between feel. Closer to those Trenton suburbs, it’s possible to see concentrated development, like churches, parks, schools and businesses. But the network of streets thins out substantially heading south, and farms begin to appear.

The southern section of Chesterfield Township consists primarily of working farms.

Chesterfield Township's ranch-styles and Cape Cods, modern townhouses and Colonial Revivals
There are some properties that lean toward rural privacy. In the $325,000 to $500,000 range there are homes pushed back on lots, reachable by driveways. For example, homebuyers will frequently find simple midcentury ranch-style homes surrounded by acre lawns or Cape Cods under the shade of towering trees. But above $500,000 and into the $600,000 range, homebuyers can opt for a denser type of living associated with urban centers. Townhouses mix traditional looks and luxurious interior finishes for a modern spin on countryside living. “A lot of these areas outside Trenton, near the Pennsylvania border and cities like Newtown have people flocking to them, because they’re revitalizing,” says Rana Bernhard, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors. Then, from $600,000 up into $1 million, homes take on an almost suburban quality. Colonial Revival-inspired homes loom over petite hedges and are connected to sidewalks out front.
