A bucolic neighborhood sprawling across southern Pennsylvania

Situated just west of Bentleyville, Somerset Township is primarily composed of a network of creeks and country roads spiderwebbing across its pastoral landscape. Expanses of land stretch out from properties here, with some residents surrounded by dense trees and others by rolling, hilly farmland. The neighborhood sits between 25 and 40 miles south of Pittsburgh, depending on route, and though it has few established restaurants, parks or places to shop, the neighborhood offers access to nearby amenities in Bentleyville. “Somerset is all country location,” says Michelle Rollins, a real estate broker for simpliHOM. “It’s more larger farms as opposed to just houses being spread out. The farming is typically cow and horse farms. It sits outside of Bentleyville, which has the small-town amenities; they do events every year and have their own little parades.”

Ranch homes situated within the landscape

Homebuyers can find an array of single-family properties in Somerset Township, but inventory is often low. “We typically don’t see a lot of houses for sale at any given time and we don’t see as many commuters,” Rollins says. “We start to see more people who need access to Pittsburgh and Morgantown.” Homes are typically ranch-style homes, with other styles like farmhouses or split-levels in the mix, and properties typically sit on an acre or more of land. Prices can range from around $100,000 to above $600,000, depending on the architectural style and land size. “On some of the larger farms, you’ll see more of the older farm-style homes built around the turn of the century,” Rollins says. “In Somerset Township, it’s more of a mix of the older farmhouses.” Somerset Township receives a CAP crime score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Heading north to the expansive Mingo Creek County Park

The landscape around Somerset Township is dotted with some parks and recreational spaces, but few sit within the neighborhood. “There aren’t too many parks, but it’s close to Mingo,” Rollins says. “That’s where everybody goes for the parks. There’s actually even a little zoo – it’s a small zoo, but it’s nice.” Mingo Creek County Park encompasses about 2,600, and its amenities include a wave pool, ice rink, several miles of trails, fishing spots and historic covered bridges. Wild World of Animals is a zoo in central Somerset Township that houses over 200 species of wildlife, which range from reptiles to mammals. Golfers can take swings at Chippewa Golf Course’s 18-hole complex, situated in southern Somerset Township, or at Rolling Green Golf Course, which sits near the northern edge of the neighborhood.

An assortment of annual events in Bentleyville

Residents can look eastward to Bentleyville for an array of annual happenings, though Mingo Creek County Park also plays host to some events during the year. “Every year, Bentleyville does the Sarris Candies Run for Alex, a 5K run, and it’s a pretty heavily-attended thing,” Rollins says. “They also do Halloween parades, veterans’ parades and they always have Santa come through town every December. You have access to all of the small-town happenings.” The annual Halloween parade is one of the borough’s larger events, featuring vendors, floats and costumes.

Dining establishments on Bentleyville’s Main Street

Residents have to head into Bentleyville for most of the area’s restaurants. The Mingo Creek Tavern, situated on the side of Route 136, has classic American food. Locals can find most of the area’s other restaurants to the east in Bentleyville on Main Street. “Bentleyville does have a couple restaurants if you need something quick on the go,” Rollins says. “It’s right off the highway, so there are fast-food options you don’t see in other small towns in the area.” Options on Main Street include Chinese food at Golden Dragon, a casual atmosphere at Carlton Diner, pizza at Fox’s Pizza Den or nightcaps at the New Bentleyville Tavern. “There’s a great, old-fashioned ice cream shop there that’s really popular,” Rollins says of Scoops on Main, which sits near the north end of the road. Residents are also less than 20 miles from Washington Crown Center and Park Shopping Center, which sandwich the neighborhood to the west and east, respectively. “You really have your choice,” Rollins says. “It’s equal distance between the two.” Grocery shoppers can head to a Giant Eagle Supermarket in Bentleyville.
