East Bay living near hills and fairways
Berkeley County Club’s fairways curve across gentle hillsides, rising above the urban milieu of El Cerrito and Richmond. Its historic Tudor clubhouse, built in 1920, is an elegant reminder of a time when the East Bay was a rural escape from San Francisco. Surrounding the club are the homes and hills that make up El Cerrito North, a community situated at the northern tip of this little city. “You’ve got some really great views up there, some of the best in the Bay Area. The prices are a little softer because you’re up in the hills, so you’re driving to get your kids to school or to get to the grocery store. It’s a little more removed than the southern end of El Cerrito, but that’s why some people like it,” says Realtor Catherine Stern of Red Oak Realty, who has been working in the East Bay for over two decades.

Homes in the lilting slopes of El Cerrito
Architectural diversity is a defining characteristic of El Cerrito North. The country club has its own homes woven between leafy green fairways, primarily custom builds and townhomes that date back to the 1980s. Outside the club, curved, hilly streets are dotted with midcentury ranch styles, early 20th century bungalows and Tudor Revival homes. Large, mature trees and bright, lush landscaping add to the visual appeal. Price tags for single-family homes in El Cerrito North hover from just under $1 million to just over $2 million, depending on size and what upgrades have been made. Townhomes typically list for between $700,000 and $1.2 million.

Berkeley Country Club
Berkeley Country Club’s luxurious clubhouse and 18-hole golf course form the centerpiece of El Cerrito North. From the top of the hill, members get wide views of the cityscape as it stretches out to the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Its Tudor Revival estate is popular for weddings and other events. Additional outdoor recreation is found on the neighborhood's east side in the forests and meadows of the Berkeley Hills. Rifle Range Road Trail, Wild Cat Canyon Regional Park and the Belgum Trail offer plenty of space for hiking and mountain biking in scenic East Bay terrain. “It’s huge out there. There’s lots and lots of open space,” Stern says. Tassajara Park, within the neighborhood, is a community gathering place with a playground, tennis courts and a baseball diamond. It also has an on-site pottery studio that hosts weekly sessions.
