A bridge between El Paso and Mexico
The Ysleta-Zaragoza bridge, one of El Paso’s six border crossings, sits on the edge of the Lower Valley neighborhood of Capistrano Park. With 11 miles separating the neighborhood from downtown El Paso, residents are closer to the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez than their own city center. Still, residents have no trouble making their way around. “It has access to the international bridge, and it’s close to Loop 375, which connects to the freeway,” says Manuel Zaragoza, broker and owner of Zaragoza Realty. Spanish influence weaves through everything, from the architecture to the restaurants and grocery stores. But the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is the community’s driving force. The federally recognized tribe, also known as the Tigua Pueblo, brings a rich history to this corner of Texas. The Southern Tiwa people fled to the area after being forced out of their ancestral home in modern-day New Mexico during the Pueblo Revolt against the Spanish in the late 1600s. Today, their descendants contribute to the local economy with business enterprises that benefit greater El Paso and the Pueblo itself.

Stocking up at Zeke’s
The neighborhood boasts two grocery stores, Food King and Zeke’s Pueblo Mexican Supermarket. “Zeke’s is real famous for their meat,” Zaragoza says. “They’ll tenderize the meat for your cookout.” Both are located near Alameda Avenue across from La Tapatia, a casual Mexican eatery. Along Alameda, residents find numerous auto parts and repair shops, chain restaurants, bars and taquerias. El Michoacano is another convenient dining spot near the skatepark and University Medical Center Ysleta. Also nearby is Tigua Smoke Shop, a tribal business specializing in quality tobacco products.

Concerts at Speaking Rock Entertainment Center
Speaking Rock Entertainment Center, another of Tigua Pueblo’s tribal enterprises, is the only casino in El Paso proper. “There’s another one, Sunland Park, but it’s in New Mexico,” Zaragoza says. The venue frequently hosts mariachi bands and other Mexican artists, with onsite restaurant Sidewalk Café dishing up Tex-Mex specialties and margaritas.
Single-story bungalows with stucco walls
Most residences in Capistrano Park are apartments, with single-family homes making up about 25 percent of the property mix. Homes don’t come up for sale often; when they do, they’re typically snapped up quickly. Single-story bungalows and ranch houses dating to the 1970s sit on tiny lots bordered by chain-link fences. Stucco, stone and brick exteriors evoke the desert landscape with sand and terra-cotta hues. In the lower half of the neighborhood, a looping grid of streets named for members of the Kennedy family offers modern single-story builds. The Kennedy complex targets lower-income families, but prices are consistent throughout the neighborhood. Buyers can expect to spend $150,000 to $200,000 for a home here.
Thinking caps at Capistrano Elementary
Students start at Capistrano Elementary School on Mecca Drive, a centrally located street within walking distance of most homes. Niche gives the elementary school a C-plus. Ysleta Middle School also gets a C-plus, and Ysleta High School earns a B-plus. The middle and high schools are within a mile of Capistrano Park and offer strong bilingual education programs.
Since 1976, Ysleta Middle School has been a symbol of educational progress in the community.

Capistrano Park steps away from the school
Since it’s right across the street from Capistrano Elementary, it’s easy to mistake the neighborhood’s namesake park for a schoolyard. But the centrally located green space is a public park with picnic pavilions, basketball courts, a playground and a baseball field. Dogs are welcome to join their human pals on the exercise path or the broad expanse of grass. On South Zaragoza Road, the short ramps and rails at Ysleta Park give skaters a place to practice their tricks. Nearby, picnic tables sit beneath shady awnings, and a playground features a swing set and a tunnel slide.

Ysleta Mission on Zaragosa Road
The sand-colored adobe walls and domed silver tower of the Ysleta Mission church peek out from behind the low walls of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. The oldest continuously operated parish in Texas dates to the 1600s, when the Tigua people first settled in the area. The Catholic Diocese of El Paso now owns the church. Still, the Tigua maintain a close association with the mission, observing the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua — their patron saint — every year on June 13th.
Riding the South Loop around El Paso
Capistrano Park sits right on the Texas 375 Loop, a beltway that forms an irregular circle around El Paso. Interstate 10 bisects the loop a short distance away, offering a direct route to San Antonio and Houston to the east and New Mexico to the north. Highway 375 is also known as the Cesar E. Chavez Border Highway, with a section that borders the neighborhood to the west and runs parallel to the Rio Grande. The Ysleta-Zaragoza bridge (“Puente Zaragoza” in Spanish) serves as a checkpoint for travelers heading across the border to Ciudad Juárez, about 8 miles away. University Medical Center Ysleta, a branch of El Paso’s non-profit community hospital, provides healthcare and job opportunities in the neighborhood. Sun Metro buses stop at several spots along Alameda Avenue, Mecca Drive and Zaragoza Road. El Paso International Airport is 10 miles away and offers nonstop service to over a dozen major U.S. cities.
