Strong ties to Mexico near El Paso’s Mission Trail
On the U.S.-Mexico border, El Paso pulsates with Hispanic culture. The energy and influence can be felt throughout the city, particularly in neighborhoods like Colonia del Valle, where nearly 90 percent of the population claims Mexican ancestry, and most residents speak Spanish at home. The neighborhood name translates to “colony of the valley” — likely a reference to El Paso’s Mission Valley, where the small residential enclave lies tucked against Texas State Highway 375.

Palm and pine trees lining residential streets
Mission Valley dates to the late 1600s, when Texas was still a territory of New Spain. “Those were some of the earlier settlements that developed in the El Paso area, when Catholic priests established missions along the Rio Grande,” says Charlie Clark, broker and owner of Century 21 Clark Brothers. Today, Colonia del Valle consists primarily of residential streets bordered by paved sidewalks and the occasional fringe of palm or pine trees. Ranch-style homes with brick and stucco exterior walls sit behind decorative fences, with small rock gardens and patches of lawn. Multistory Spanish Mission-style homes are common in the southern half of the neighborhood, and Los Pinos, an all-ages mobile home community, offers rentals near Highway 375. Most homes were built between 1970 and 2000, with some newer construction mixed in. Homebuyers can expect to spend $150,000 to $250,000 — budget-friendly prices by El Paso standards.
Colonia Del Valle often has local events, festivals, and a vibrant sense of community.

Del Valle High School, home of the Conquistadores
Lancaster Elementary School earns a Niche grade of B-minus and boasts a convenient location right across North Loop Drive. While the school might be within walking distance of some homes, North Loop is a busy four-lane highway, making crossing difficult. Del Valle Middle School gets a C-plus and is a short drive north. At the A-minus-rated Del Valle High School, students can take advantage of advanced placement and dual-credit courses in conjunction with Austin Community College. The high school is less than a mile from most homes in Colonia del Valle, next to Conquest Stadium, where student athletes compete in football, track and soccer.

Playing ball at Lancaster Park
Across the street from the elementary school, a baseball diamond and basketball courts lure budding athletes to Lancaster Park. The park also features a playground with shady awnings and a crawl-through tunnel. Facilities are generally well-maintained, and the school-adjacent location makes it a quiet place to take the dog for an evening walk.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church was established in 1981
The Corpus Christi Catholic Church opened its doors in 1981, making it considerably younger than 400-year-old churches on the nearby Mission Trail. In the past four decades, the newer church has steadily grown to a family of 4,000 parishioners. Daily Mass is in Spanish, with one English service on Sundays. In September, the church hosts the Gran Festival de Corpus Christi, a three-day event with live music and a raffle drawing.

Things to consider
El Paso ranks among the worst cities in the U.S. when it comes to air pollution. Idling traffic around the Bridge of the Americas, one of the bridges connecting El Paso to Ciudad Juárez in Mexico, is a major culprit. Colonia del Valle is 15 miles from the bridge, so the issue may not be as pronounced as in Central El Paso, but the effects are still measurable.
Colonia Del Valle offers several grocery options including this El Super.
For all your retail needs, Colonia Del Valle has a Walmart.
