Living in the heart of El Paso
Welcome to El Paso, Texas. This dynamic community of well over 650,000 people is waiting to offer you historic hotels and districts, numerous shopping and dining options, and so much more. Of course, the city wasn’t always the sixth largest in Texas. In fact, until the 1880s when the railroad arrived, El Paso was mostly made up of Adobe houses and not much else. However, the trains regularly passing through made the town into a city by the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, El Paso has become one of the destination cities of the Southwest. The metropolitan area has everything you’d expect with live music and theater venues, bars, cafes, restaurants, and shopping along with some things you might not, like chalk festivals, numerous green spaces, and art installations throughout Downtown. Whether you want to relocate to the city or simply visit, El Paso is an exciting experience waiting to happen. The city of El Paso is dedicated to keeping its dynamic economy vibrant and flourishing. To do that, the city is actively encouraging new businesses to open while helping established companies to grow. Some of the major industries in the area include electronics, finance, defense, biomedical, food production, and textiles.
Buying into the community
El Paso has an incredibly rich architectural history. Downtown features buildings built in Art Deco, Bhutanese, Greek Revival, and Romanesque styles. Unfortunately, many of the original homes in the area were taken down when the railroad arrived in the 1880s and the area became rich with commerce. Luckily, there’s a historic neighborhood nearby called Sunset Heights Historic District, which was designated in 1983 as a way to preserve a large amount of dense housing near Downtown. The median housing price is $167,000.
Attending El Paso Independent School District
Serving nearly 50,000 students across 80 separate campuses, the El Paso Independent School District has been teaching students and creating leaders since 1882. They oversee 10 high schools, 14 middle schools, 46 elementary schools, and 2 prekindergarten facilities among other specialty schools. The public schools in the city are ranked among the best in the nation and many of them are in and around Downtown.
Tula Irrobali Park, and other outdoor spaces
El Paso has numerous parks and green spaces scattered throughout the city. Some of the spaces in Downtown include Tula Irrobali Park, Magoffin Park, and the Paseo de los Heroes Park. Tula Irrobali Park features a baseball diamond, basketball court, and playground while Magoffin Park also has a playground and gazebo. The Paseo de los Heroes extends along the median of Olives V. Any Avenue and offers shade trees, benches, and a play space for children.
Downtown has bakeries, art galleries and dining options
Downtown El Paso has all the conveniences and amenities of a metropolitan area combined with the feel of a laid-back Southwestern town. There are numerous corner stores and grocery shops in the area as well as a bakery where fresh bread can be found each morning. Retail commerce is abundant in the area as are hotels, museums, art galleries, and restaurants as well as public transportation.
Chalk the Block and Viva! El Paso
Throughout the year, dozens of events like festivals and marathons delight locals and visitors alike. There’s the Chalk the Block event, which takes place in October and allows artists to take over the streets of El Paso with out-of-this-world drawings. The three-day festival has quickly become the largest free event in the Southwest and regularly has more than 45,000 people attending. Then there’s Viva! El Paso, an outdoor experience which takes place each July and August. The musical extravaganza celebrates the four cultures that have shaped the city over the past four centuries.
Streetcars return to n the city
Commuting in El Paso takes less time than in other U.S. cities since the daily drive to work here is only 22 minutes one-way while the rest of the nation averages 26 minutes one-way. Most people travel alone in their cars, although more than 11% of workers carpool here as well. For those without a car, El Paso’s public transit, like their newly returned streetcars, will have you to work in no time. The streetcars travel a nearly five-mile double loop through both uptown and downtown and have free Wi-Fi available in each vehicle.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
