East Side neighborhood with retail and restaurant options
With the 1959 release of his signature song “El Paso,” Marty Robbins gave the Sun City a hallowed place in country music history. The east El Paso neighborhood that bears his name is divided into two parts, not unlike the fickle affections of the dark-eyed maiden in his famed gunfighter ballad. Both parts are residential, but Marty Robbins South offers more retail, restaurants and recreation than its northern counterpart. “Speaking from a homebuyer’s perspective, I’d say they’re pretty much the same,” says Isacc Lightbourn, YouTube host and Realtor with Clear View Realty. “But Marty Robbins South is also around a lot of commercial activity.” Lower-than-average home prices are another selling point, says Alejandro Sosa, real estate agent with Pena El Paso and co-host of the "Living in El Paso" channel on YouTube. “It’s a good neighborhood for people who want to be in the middle of everything but don’t want to spend a lot of money and don’t care about brand-new construction.” The area is also home to Marty Robbins Park, an impressive recreational facility with a gym and indoor pool.

Clamato cocktails and freshly cut flowers at El Paso Plaza
The neighborhood is bordered by retail centers that fulfill a variety of needs. Mornings begin with espresso concoctions and pastries from Global Coffee Roasters on North Zaragoza Road. Ernie’s Café Bar & Grill serves egg dishes for breakfast and moves to barbacoa during lunch and dinner. For upscale dining, leather chairs and snug booths offer views of the open kitchen at Corralito Steak House, where tomahawk and porterhouse steaks are king. Groceries are available at Walmart Neighborhood Market, right up the road. At El Paso Plaza, shoppers select freshly cut flowers from Debbie’s Bloomers and pick up essentials at Big Lots, Dollar General and Goodwill. Tacos, burgers and tostadas are available at El Barril, a bar famous for its Clamato cocktails. And when the sun goes down, the bars come to life at watering holes Whiskey Dicks and Desert Bum.

Brick ranch-style and snout houses shaded by pines
Wide residential streets flecked with pine and palm trees roll through the central section of Marty Robbins South. Level terrain and paved sidewalks make it easy to meander through the rows of split-level contemporary, brick ranch-style and snout houses. “That neighborhood has been established since the late ’70s, early ’80s,” says Tony Jimenez, real estate agent with Thrive Realty. Properties tend to be small, with short driveways, attached garages and pocket-sized lawns. Home prices typically range from $150,000 to $300,000, significantly lower than in surrounding neighborhoods like Stone Ridge, Las Palmas and Ranchos del Sol.

Fun in the sun at Marty Robbins Park
When El Paso celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2023, the Music in the Park concert series opened at Marty Robbins Park. The centrally located green space consists of a vast field punctuated by mature trees, basketball courts and a baseball field. A shaded playground is tucked beside the onsite recreation center, which houses a gymnasium, ballet studio and ping-pong tables. Giant tropical-themed sculptures tower over the splash pad outside the Marty Robbins Aquatic Center, and a pool with a corkscrew waterslide awaits inside.

Things to consider
Ozone pollution is a concern in El Paso. Because the city is right on the U.S.-Mexico border, heavy traffic and idling vehicles adversely affect the air quality. Marty Robbins South is several miles from the nearest border crossing, but anyone considering a move to El Paso should be aware of the issue.
