Mesa Vista, in El Paso's Mission Valley, puts an emphasis on community

Mesa Vista is about the community. The residential neighborhood in El Paso’s Mission Valley region is a place where people support one another. At Judge Edward S. Marquez Library, locals can take English conversation and citizenship classes. If they pass, they often return to class to thank the teachers — only to find a celebration waiting for them. “We’ll throw them a party with cake and drinks,” branch manager Mike Pitterman says. “We like serving the community.” Mesa Vista is home to several restaurants and green spaces, and its residents have easy access to Interstate 10.

Brick and stucco ranch-style houses, plus larger Mediterranean-influenced homes

The area is filled with brick or stucco ranch-style housing. Homes often have carports and use rocks or stone in place of a front lawn. These residences can range from $140,000 to $200,000. A few larger multilevel homes with a Mediterranean influence can be found in the Bel Air Estates subdivision. These houses can cost between $275,000 and $400,000. Yards usually use gravel in place of grass, though some have bushes. Small trees are scattered throughout the area. Sidewalks and wide streets make walking to neighbors’ houses convenient.

Eat at local restaurants and get groceries at El Super

Rudy’s “Country Store” and Bar-B-Q serves a wide selection of meats and sells sauces, rubs and apparel. Villa Del Mar specializes in seafood. Julio’s Mexican Food began as a 1944 neighborhood haunt in Juarez and has traditional entrees. Across Interstate 10 sits Walmart Supercenter, Burlington and other retail options. Yarbrough Plaza has an El Super grocery store and a Ross Dress for Less among its tenants. Sam’s Club is also a few miles away.

Bel Air High School has a program focused on health care

Students are zoned for the Ysleta Independent School District. They can attend Loma Terrace Elementary School, which has a B-minus Niche grade. Bel Air Middle School holds a B score. Bel Air High School offers the Center for Health Professions, a program with focused health care curriculums and opportunities for real-world experience. Paths include dental assistant, veterinary science and pharmacy technician. It earns a B-plus grade.

A range of events at Judge Marquez Library and sports at Ralph T. Cloud Park

In addition to citizenship classes, Judge Marquez Library hosts art exhibits created by locals and runs a popular summer reading program. Next to the facility is Ralph T. Cloud Park, renamed from Yucca Park in 2022 in honor of a longtime community leader. It has baseball and basketball facilities plus an open field. It is bordered by a mile-long trail loop where residents often walk their dogs. It shares space with Crime Victims Memorial Park, which has benches, a garden pavilion and a tribute to lives lost in violent crimes, including fallen police officers. Nearby E.L. Williams Park has additional baseball diamonds and two playgrounds. Cristo Rey Catholic Church and other houses of worship sit within the community.

Highway access without bumper-to-bumper traffic

Interstate 10 is the community’s norther border and can take drivers into Downtown El Paso, just over 10 miles west. Pitterman says there can be some slowdowns on neighborhood streets when schools let out, but it quickly gets cleared. “I used to live in Houston,” Pitterman says. “The traffic here is nothing like it is there.” El Paso International Airport is close to 5 miles away. Sun Metro operates a public bus service in the area. Several stops sit along North Yarbrough Drive. Summers can get above 105 degrees, but it is generally a dry heat, Pitterman says. Dust storms can also occur in the spring.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
