Retail and residential living in Westside

With a bustling shopping district just off Interstate 10 paired with peaceful suburban streets, residents of Remcon have just about everything they need right out their front doors. While the area’s homes are older than much of Westside El Paso, first-time homebuyers have gravitated to Remcon for its more affordable prices and convenience to local businesses. “It’s definitely a nicer area, the homes are from the early 1980s so it’s a little bit older,” says Patti Olivas, Associate Broker and Owner of Dan Olivas and Associates. “It could be a lot of first-time buyers since they’re a little more affordable than surrounding areas, and you get a little more of a yard since lot sizes have gotten smaller with the newer homes.”

Restaurants and retail at West Ten Center

At Mesa Street and Remcon Circle, the neighborhood’s commercial center is the West Ten Center, anchored by a Walmart Supercenter and The Home Depot. The area also has plenty of chain restaurants, like Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que and Saltgrass Steakhouse. Further along Mesa Street, Albertsons has groceries and other essentials. While the northern half of Remcon lacks many businesses, one local favorite is Crave Kitchen and Bar, with fresh takes on Southern classics like chicken and waffles.

Remcon’s older homes

Much of Remcon has a commercial character, especially in the southern portion of the neighborhood near Mesa Street. The area does have a residential component as well, with apartment complexes, smaller subdivisions of single-family homes and a planned townhouse development. The northern end of the neighborhood has more of a suburban feel, with brick ranchers and bi-level houses occupying quiet streets. Single-family homes start in the mid-$100,000s for a property in need of a little love and go up to the mid-$300,000s for a custom build. The area’s new townhomes near commercial centers sell closer to $400,000.

The B-minus-rated Brown Middle School is next, before students finish their secondary education at A-minus-rated Franklin High School. On either side of the neighborhood, Resler Canyon and the Westside Open Reserve have recreation opportunities within a short walk from Remcon. Those walking the dog or looking for an easy hike can use Resler Canyon’s 2.1-mile out-and-back trail, while the Westside Open Reserve has paths along with a recreation center, skatepark and playground. Franklin Mountains State Park sits less than 10 miles from Remcon for a more strenuous hike, as well as great views down into the city of El Paso. “People will go up there for a hike, but they also go out to New Mexico sometimes,” says Antwann Woodley, Realtor at RE/MAX Associates. “White Sands National Park is up there. The outdoor opportunities are really a selling point for the whole Westside of El Paso.”
