San Juan is an older neighborhood with access to all of El Paso
San Juan has always been about access. The residential neighborhood is just north of Alameda Avenue, El Paso’s main highway in the 1950s. The city developed outward from there — first centrally, where the community is, then to the west, and in more recent years to the east. Today, San Juan calls Interstate 10 its northern border, giving residents access to El Paso’s growing list of amenities. “It still has a good location and good prices, and people like those older homes,” says Albert Aguilar, a Realtor with Mary Aguilar Realtors.
Mediterranean-influenced homes and investment properties with gravel yards
Neighborhood homes are Mediterranean influenced with stucco or brick exteriors, two to four bedrooms and carports. Most were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Prices typically range from $130,000 to $175,000, which is well below the city average. Investment properties are also available, usually from $70,000 to $200,000. Community streets often have sidewalks on both sides and streetlights are frequent. Roadside mailboxes are rare, with mail often delivered to front doors instead. While some front lawns use grass, most use gravel or stones. Yards can still feature bushes or small trees.
Authentic Mexican food and nearby Fox Plaza Shopping Center
Forti’s Mexican Elder Restaurant began serving the community authentic entrees in 1976. Burritos Lore's features colorful menus and is known for its menudo in addition to its namesake burritos. Chelsea Café specializes in breakfast platters. Nearby Fox Plaza Shopping Center has fast food restaurants and retail stores like Ross Dress for Less. Food King is to the south while Target and Albertsons are north of Interstate 10.
Interstate 10 connects residents with the rest of the city
Interstate 10 can take drivers into Downtown El Paso, just over 5 miles west. U.S. Route 62, known locally as East Paisano Drive, bisects the neighborhood and can lead western residents toward El Paso International Airport, which is around 3 miles away. Fort Bliss is about 5 miles north. “The traffic is like the rest of El Paso,” Aguilar says. “It’s not too congested — yet.” Sun Metro public buses make several stops throughout the community. Temperatures can exceed 105 degrees in the summer. March and April can bring dust storms that limit visibility.
Nearby schools receive high Niche grades
Students are served by the El Paso Independent School District. They can attend Hawkins Elementary School, which holds a B-plus Niche grade. Coach Wally Hartley PK-8 School earns an A-minus. Burges High School offers the Burges Early College High School program, which allows students to receive a diploma and an associate degree at the same time. It has a B-minus Niche grade. Nearby Radford School, a private pre-kindergarten through 12th grade institution, gets an A.
Athletic facilities, murals and the El Paso Zoo
San Juan Recreation Center has a boxing gym and a weight room among its amenities, and it hosts classes like Zumba workouts. Though the area has no parks of its own, several can be found within a few miles. Saipan-Ledo Park holds sporting events on its multipurpose fields. Lincoln Park, located underneath several highways to the west, is a social center for Central El Paso. It has murals and historical markers and is the site of events like car shows and cultural celebrations. Nearby Washington Park houses a baseball diamond and a basketball court. It is next to the El Paso Zoo, where guests can spot animals from four regions, including some native to the Chihuahuan Desert. San Juan Bautista Catholic Church holds mass in Spanish at 8 a.m. each day. Several other churches sit in and around the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
