Different kind of suburban Chicago neighborhood
Most Century Oaks residents are homeowners except in the southwest corner of the neighborhood near the intersection of Big Timber Road and McLean Boulevard, where there is a mix of low-density apartments, strip mall retail stores and a contemporary business park with offices and manufacturing centers.The neighborhood just to the west of Century Oaks is Century Oaks West, where there are more modern homes and the lots are closer together. In Century Oaks, split-level, ranch-style and two-story homes were built in the 1950s and ‘70s and have large front yards and total lot sizes up to a little over an acre. Most homes cost between $270,000 and $470,000. Some of the backyards back up to the Tyler Creek Forest Preserve, contributing to added privacy. “Homes are a little different than other Chicago suburbs because of the larger lot size,” Wisdom says. The CAP crime score index for the neighborhood is 6, higher than the national average of 4. The categories with the highest ratings are property crimes like larceny and burglary.

Century Oaks Elementary in the neighborhood
Century Oaks Elementary School is within walking distance for some in the neighborhood. The prekindergarten through sixth-grade school gets a C-plus rating on Niche. Seventh and eighth graders go to Kimball Middle School, with a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C overall grade. Larkin High School gets a C-plus grade.

Metra station is just to the west
There is a Metra commuter rail station on Big Timber Road, a mile and a half west of the neighborhood. The trip to Union Station in downtown Chicago takes about an hour and 20 minutes. I-90 can be accessed on Randall Road or State Street and it’s a 25-mile trip east to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Pace provides bus transportation and there are stops on Big Timber Road.
Residents can use the Metra at Big Timber Road to be in Chicago in only one hour.

Tyler Creek Forest Preserve serves as the neighborhood’s eastern border
The city of Elgin is home to many forested areas, including the 48-acre Tyler Creek Forest Preserve. Amenities include bike and nature trails, a picnic area and the namesake waterway flowing through. Century Oaks Park is on the west side of the neighborhood off Mclean Boulevard. Most of the facility is open space, but there is a small playground at the north end of the 4-acre park.

Dining and shopping around Tyler Creek Plaza
The grocery shopping and dining-out options are near the intersection of Big Timber Road and McLean Boulevard. Butera Market is a Chicagoland family-owned grocer that has been around for 60 years. Along with a deli and bakery, there’s a variety of foods available from all over the world. Jewel-Osco is 3 miles south. Big Skillet Restaurant & Pancake House is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day except Sunday when they’re only open through lunch. At El Faro Mexican Restaurant in the Tyler Creek Plaza shopping center, guests order tacos, tortas and tamales at the counter inside a small storefront that seats up to 20 people. Chain options include Subway and Culver’s.
Both dine-in and takeout options are available at El Faro Mexican Restaurant.
