The namesake neighborhood of Elkhart's North Side
Broadly speaking, the North Side describes the area north of downtown Elkhart and the Saint Joseph River. The Northside neighborhood is, of course, a key piece of that larger puzzle. Northside offers a mix of residential blocks and an industrial area near the railroad tracks on the southern boundary of the neighborhood -- all in walking distance of the botanic garden that is considered one of the most beautiful spots in the entire Michiana region, and one of Elkhart's most popular city parks.

A mix of styles from the early 20th century
Like many neighborhoods that experienced rapid growth as American servicemen returned home from World War II, the Northside has several mid-1940s cottages and bungalows ranging from 900 to 1,200 square feet. But there are also two-story Foursquares and American Traditional houses. Prices range from $75,000 to $230,000, with those sold under $100,000 usually being investor properties or fixer-uppers.
Unique two story homes can be found sitting on large corner lots in Northside.
Small bungalows can be found all around Northside.

A beautiful botanic garden and top-notch fishing hole are here
The neighborhood is adjacent to Wellfield Botanic Gardens, which are billed as “Michiana’s most beautiful location” for good reason. There are more than 20 different gardens on display at the facility. It’s also about to get better thanks to a 12,000-square foot visitors' center scheduled to open in December 2024. The space will also include a covered pavilion that will be functional from spring to fall. “The new buildings will allow us to provide educational opportunities, programs and classes, and volunteer opportunities year-round, and further our mission to a larger audience that's no longer dependent upon optimal summer weather,” says executive director Eric Garton. High Dive Park – which features tennis courts, an accessible playground and a dog park – is in the neighborhood. The park’s lagoon is a favorite spot for Elkhart anglers. “It's literally fishing in a barrel sometimes,” says Elkhart Parks and Recreation superintendent Jamison Czarnecki. “It's ideal for anybody who wants to feel like they're a good fisherman.”

Convenient to grocery and dining options
Northside residents have several grocery stores nearby. There is a Kroger in the neighborhood and a Martin’s Super Market just across the Johnson Street Bridge on Elkhart’s South Side. A Meijer about 3 miles north of the neighborhood near the Indiana Toll Road is also an option. Several restaurants are just outside of the neighborhood. Amish donut shop Rise ‘N Shine Bakery has one of its area locations here. RG’s Pancake House is another early-morning dining favorite. El Nopal is a tiny, but popular, takeout taqueria. George’s Gyros is another local favorite known not just for its gyros shaved off the spit, but also its rib tips.

Wellfield a year-round destination
Wellfield hosts events throughout the year – even in winter when few plants are in bloom. The botanic garden’s Winter Wonderland display is one of Elkhart’s largest holiday light shows. It is the rest of the year when the garden really shines, however. Seasonal events include weekly yoga classes, monthly horticulture classes, and the Groovin’ In the Gardens concert series on Thursday nights from June through August. Taste of the Gardens, a fundraiser that highlights local restaurants and food trucks, is Wellfield’s last major summer event near the end of each August.

Major city roads cross through neighborhood
Three of Elkhart’s major north-south thoroughfares cross through the neighborhood – Main Street, which runs a mile south to downtown, and Cassopolis and Johnson Streets, which run 3 miles north to junctions with the Indiana Toll Road. The Interurban Trolley Blue Line, which connects downtown with the Meijer near the Toll Road, has multiple stops along Cassopolis. And though the freight line on the neighborhood's southern boundary was instrumental to the industries that fueled the neighborhood's initial postwar growth, it can create the occasional traffic backup along Main and Cassopolis for those headed to or from downtown Elkhart.
