A little breathing room but still close to shopping and entertainment
Located about 9 miles west of downtown New Orleans, the area in and around Elmwood in Jefferson Parrish offers its habitants a little more breathing room while still keeping them within reasonable reach of shopping, dining and some of the Big Easy’s renown districts. Elmwood stands out for a few reasons, with one being the fact that it’s a location for a number of warehouse-style employers. The New Orleans Coca-Cola Bottling Company on Citrus Boulevard and Maxx Hydraulics Superior Sealing Solutions on Kuebel Street are just a few of the companies with a presence here. The Coca-Cola site comprises several facilities that include a sales center, a production facility, an equipment refurbishment center and a fleet of delivery trucks. The community also houses several chain shopping and entertainment destinations, whether it is the Sky Zone Trampoline Park on Distributors Row or the Elmwood shopping center located right between Elmwood Park Boulevard and South Clearview Parkway. But for at least sports fans, Elmwood is perhaps best known for the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Airline Drive. The approximately 77,500-square-foot venue serves as a practice facility for both the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. “It’s kind of pricey, but the prices there are not as high as Lakeview or Metairie, for example,” says Robin Durel, a Realtor with Re/Max Affiliates and who has made over 30 sales in Elmwood and the neighboring and more residentially dense areas of Harahan and River Ridge. “It’s a nice little family area. It’s close to Uptown. I can hit River Road and go to Uptown quickly. I like that about it. A lot of people think it’s kind of far out of the way, but I don’t think so.”
Condos, ranches, cottages and French colonials
While there are some apartments like the Citrus Creek West and Willow Creek complexes south of the Earhart Expressway, Elmwood itself isn’t dense with single-family homes. Those interested in finding a house on this side of the greater New Orleans area will likely need to look at either River Ridge or Harahan. Those two neighboring communities start along the western side of Hickory and Dickory avenues, which form Elmwood’s western boundary. In Elmwood, those looking to simply own can find some condominiums or townhomes in the price range of $100,000 to $200,000, depending on the exact type of abode and other factors such as number of bedrooms. In nearby River Ridge and Harahan, they’ll find many single-family houses showing French colonial, ranch and cottage styles. Price points here can start in the $200,000s for cottages, reach just under $500,000 for ranch-style houses and go from around $550,000 to nearly $900,000 for colonials – particularly those with French touches.
