A mix of country and city life

Located about 30 miles south of Downtown Dallas, Ellis County offers a mix of country and city life outside the Metroplex. “It’s still got that small-town feel, but we also have amenities. We have a lot of new restaurants coming in. We have a lot of nice parks,” says local Realtor Cheryl Johnston with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services PenFed Realty Texas. Waxahachie and Ennis offer mid-sized cities in the county with lots of open land between. Major highways that lead directly into Downtown Dallas and Fort Worth make commuting into the metro cities simple.

Ranch-styles, farmhouses and traditional brick homes

Homes throughout Ellis County range in various styles and sizes, in part because of the rural nature of the area. Farmhouses with lots of acreage are common outside of towns, while the homes in cities like Waxahachie and Ennis are usually traditional brick and ranch-style houses. These homes are generally built close to neighbors. Modest ranch-style houses near town typically cost between $90,000 and $250,000, with the cheaper end of the range as houses needing renovations. Traditional brick homes and Colonial Revivals in Downtown Ennis usually range between $250,000 and $450,000. Custom homes and large farmhouses in rural areas will cost more, often costing between $600,000 and several million.

Fishing and boating at Bardwell Lake

Outdoor recreation is a prominent part of life for Ellis County residents, with two large lakes and several other outdoor activities nearby. Bardwell Lake offers a serene, scenic location for boating and fishing. The full-service marina and four-lane boat ramp make it easy to relax on the water. The grassy shores and covered tables throughout the peninsula offer a relaxing location for a picnic or camping. Bluebonnet Park is near the leg and has several playgrounds, walking trails and sprawling wildflower fields. Known as the baseball and softball destination of the county, athletes appreciate the park’s eight lighted diamonds, which regularly host regional and local tournaments. Along Highway 287 is the Texas Motorplex, a drag-racing track that has hosted championship races since 1986.
