Ranch-styles, farmhouses and traditional brick homes
Homes throughout Ellis County range in various styles and sizes, in part because of the rural nature of the area. Farmhouses with lots of acreage are common outside of towns, while the homes in cities like Waxahachie and Ennis are usually traditional brick and ranch-style houses. Bluebonnet Park is near the leg and has several playgrounds, walking trails and sprawling wildflower fields. Known as the baseball and softball destination of the county, athletes appreciate the park’s eight lighted diamonds, which regularly host regional and local tournaments. Along Highway 287 is the Texas Motorplex, a drag-racing track that has hosted championship races since 1986.

Football championships at Ennis High School
Children are part of the Ellis Independent School District. Bowie Elementary School gets a B-Plus Grade from Niche. Students start at Bowie Elementary School, receiving a B-plus from Niche. The next stop is Ennis Junior High School, a B-rated institution by Niche. Ennis Junior High has activities for students to participate in, like the Archery Club, Metal Shop and Future Farmers of America. Ennis High School also earns a B-plus from Niche and is known for its athletics. The football team is among the most successful, winning five state championships. Nelson University is a private Christian university in Waxahachie and offers various undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Southern classics at The Doves Nest
Depending on where they live in Ellis County, residents often visit Waxahachie or Ennis for retail or restaurant needs. In Waxahachie, much of the shopping and dining takes place on Ferris Avenue, running down the heart of town. Johnson recommends The Doves Nest, a two-story restaurant with an elegant, white tablecloth décor serving Southern classics. Patrons praise the chicken salad and chocolate bourbon pecan pie. Tuscan Slice is a family-owned spot for Italian food and wood-fired pizza serving alfredo and flatbreads. Ennis has fewer dining options, but Bluebonnet City Grill is one of the local favorites. Bluebonnet Grill is a Texas diner known for its price and chicken fried steak. Ennis has an H-E-B and a Walmart for groceries, while Waxahachie has those plus Foodland Markets, ALDI and Target.

Interstate 35 and Highway 287 lead to metro cities
Ellis County is a car-dependent area with no public transportation options. Interstate 35 leads north into Dallas, about 35 miles away, while Highway 287 heads west towards Midlothian and Fort Worth, about 58 miles away. Complete Health Medical Center sits near the center of Waxahachie, while Baylor Scott and White Family Medical Center is in the northwest corner of the area. Travelers can head to Mid-Way Regional Airport, about 22 miles northwest of Ennis.
