A quiet residential landscape surrounded by abundant recreation
Banner Hill is a small rural community surrounded by nature and supported by a welcoming community. Located at the foothills of the Smoky and Appalachian mountains, residents don’t have to travel far to explore Martin’s Creek Waterfall, paddle the Nolichucky River or hop on the iconic Appalachian Trail. Banner Hill exemplifies greater Erwin's slogan — “Where the Mountains and the People Welcome You” — through its annual events and friendly exchanges with familiar faces at downtown establishments. “It’s a small but growing town and everybody knows one another. The people are very friendly and it's easy to strike up a conversation at the post office or store,” says Char Peery Ogborn, a local librarian at Unicoi County Public Library. “I love living here.”

Ranch-styles and mountain views
Banner Hill comprises Erwin’s south side and is a suburban setting that gradually becomes more dispersed as the community stretches toward the mountains. Lining each of its one-lane residential roads are homes built throughout the 20th century, along with a handful of homes built during the last 25 years. Ranch-styles, raised and single-storied, are the most common designs in Banner Hill, followed by minimal Traditional, front-gabled styles and manufactured homes. While the number varies, most properties sit on quarter- to half-acre lots with enough space for backyard gardens, and no matter where they live in the community residents are always assured mountain views. For those living closer to town, it's the spires of local churches that dot the horizon. Homes in Banner Hill typically sell between $130,000 and $360,000, however, those built in recent years, on larger acreage can reach prices of up to $650,000. “There are also no city taxes and just country taxes, which is a plus,” says Kelsey Barklow, Realtor with Hurd Realty.

Downtown Erwin's local establishments
For decades, the locally owned Dari Ace has served residents its burgers, fries and milkshakes in a '60s-inspired dining room. Cowboy’s Rendezvous Bar on Watauga Avenue and downtown’s Union Street Taproom are Erwin’s most frequented spots to grab drinks. The latter sits a street over from South Main Avenue, a walkable corridor where local establishments are housed within longstanding brick storefronts. Along the stretch, residents can enjoy morning pastries at The Bellflower and lattes at Steel Rails Coffee House, peruse a handful of antique shops and boutiques or explore Baker’s Shoe Repair & Saddle Shop’s leather goods. Residents may pick up groceries from Price Less on Jackson Love Highway or head to the Walmart Supercenter 6 miles northeast for more robust retail needs.

From the Unicoi County Apple Festival to the CSX Santa Train
“There’s a lot of events throughout the year,” says Ogborn. “During the holidays, we do a Christmas parade, tree lighting ceremony and a Santa train." For more than 80 years, the train has brought a cheerful Santa Clause into town along the CSX rail line. Waving to those gathered alongside the tracks, Santa and his helpers greet locals before tossing stuffed animals out into the crowds. Other notable seasonal events include the Unicoi County Apple Festival in the fall and the Erwin Farmers Market. “First Fridays is also nice,” says Ogborn. “They usually have food trucks downtown and the businesses close late. It encourages people to come into town and shop local for an evening once a month."
