Native American farming village with scenic waterfalls and convenient commutes
Set 20 miles north of Santa Fe and 23 miles east of Los Alamos, Nambe is a Native American pueblo set against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The area offers beautiful natural spaces, a rural lifestyle and commuter convenience. “It’s a little farming village of around 1,200 people with trees and the Nambe River, but it’s also great for commuters because it’s only 20 minutes from Santa Fe and Los Alamos,” says Steve Atwell, a Santa Fe local and Broker with Triad Realty. The Nambe Pueblo was first settled in the 1300s by Tewa Indians, who used the waters from Nambe Falls for rituals, and the Nambe River’s streams to farm; today, residents still hike to the cool mountain waters of Nambe Falls, manage small-scale farms along the river, and congregate at the nearly 100-year-old Sacred Heart Church. Nambe's CAP Crime Index Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Pueblo Revival homes amid flowing streams and mature trees
Scattered along winding dirt roads, Nambe’s homes are surrounded by juniper-pinyon woodlands, mountain views and mature cottonwoods and elms fed by the Nambe River. "The Nambe's special because it's always flowing, unlike a lot of other rivers here," Atwell says. Most homes are Pueblo Revival abodes from the 1940s to ‘70s, featuring flat roofs, exposed wooden beams called vigas and authentic adobe exteriors. Homes are set on half-acre to 3-acre lots of gently sloping grasslands that are used for art studios, natural gardens and fruit orchards; some lots feature acequias (irrigation ditches) or private wells, while others rely on shared community wells in the Nambe Pueblo. Prices typically range from $375,000 to $575,000, depending on acreage and water rights; however, those with established horse stables and greenhouses can range from $745,000 to $1.2 million, with larger lots fetching higher prices. Parcels of land are also available in Nambe, often on flat grasslands dotted with trees; prices range from $210,000 for 2-acre lots on the Nambe River and go up to $950,000 for 15-acre lots surrounded by creeks and ponds.
Nambe Falls and the Wellness Center
Nambe is famous for the Nambe Falls Recreation Area, a small, forested park featuring wooded campgrounds and waterfalls that stream down from the Sangre de Cristos. The quarter-mile Dry Loop trail takes hikers up steep hills lined with ponderosa pines to overlook the falls, while the quarter-mile Wet Loop trail leads directly to the falls and their pools, crossing through cold mountain streams along the way. The nearly 7-mile Nambe Lake Trail travels from the campgrounds, past the waterfalls and up to the stunning Nambe Lake, which is set in a mountain valley above the waterfalls. “It’s really a great area, and you can even bring your dogs, but I’d just be careful because the trails can be steep and slippery,” Atwell says. Members of the Nambe Pueblo also have access to the Nambe Pueblo Wellness Center, a gym set on the community’s eastern edge.
Shopping in the Pojoaque Pueblo
Nambe is adjacent to central Pojoaque, which is full of Native American- and Latino-owned businesses. The Pojoaque Supermarket lies 4 miles south on Cities of Gold Road; neighboring businesses include the Sopaipilla Factory, which serves green chile-stuffed sopaipillas for breakfast and dinner, and the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum, which hosts exhibits on the history of the Tewa Indians. The Cities of Gold Casino here also invites locals to enjoy bowling and the only dollar coin slot machines in New Mexico, and the Buffalo Thunder Resort Casino is home to the fine dining establishment Red Sage.
Downtown Santa Fe is 20 miles south, with the eclectic dining scene of the Santa Fe Plaza making it a popular weekend spot for residents. According to Mark Rochester, a local Berkshire Hathaway broker and former international horse trader, cocktail bars like the Shed and upscale restaurants like La Boca make Santa Fe one of the best places to get dinner on earth.
Schools in the Pojoaque Valley
Local kids can start school at Pablo Roybal Elementary, which serves Kindergarten through Grade 3 and scores a B from Niche, then continue to the C-rated Pojoaque Valley Intermediate and B-minus-rated Pojoaque Valley Middle. At the C-rated Pojoaque Valley High, students can join clubs for filmmaking and engineering.
Convenient to Santa Fe and Los Alamos
The famous High Road to Taos runs through Nambe’s center, connecting around 2 miles west to US 84 and New Mexico 502. “It’s a beautiful road, connected to a bunch of parks and churches like the Sacred Heart Church,” explains Atwell. US 84 leads 20 miles south to Santa Fe, and NM 502 leads 23 miles west to Los Alamos. The Presbyterian Espanola Hospital is around 12 miles north, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 23 miles south.
