About Eufaula, AL

About Eufaula, AL

Echoes of the 1800s linger in Eufaula’s outdoor playground

The past and present blend in Eufaula, where pre-Civil War structures stand in the east Alabama city known as The Big Bass Capital of the World. As has been the case for centuries, agriculture is integral to the local economy, which also benefits from tourism activities at the 46,000-acre Lake Eufaula, which marks the Georgia state line. Lake Eufaula and pre-Civil War homes are “the two things that we’re probably most well-known,” says lifelong resident John Adams Gray, a Realtor who has been selling homes in the area for a year with Chattahoochee Realty Group. “Lots of new people are moving here from the south and all over the country for items such as the lake and Eufaula being a historic town. The lake homes drive a lot of people here, in addition to just the community itself.” Top employers include a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant and the Westrock Mahrt Mill. The small city has a population of 12,451, a decrease of 686 residents since 2010.

Eufaula’s pre-Civil War homes bring the past alive

Pre- and post-Civil War homes are primarily located in the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District, where oaks and magnolias overhang streets lined with Italianate, Greek Revival and Victorian architecture. “Sherman, when he came through, didn’t burn any of the houses,” says local Realtor John Baker of Baker Realty, who has been selling homes in the area for nearly 40 years. “We were very fortunate because we were a hospital town.” Many historic homes are open for tours during the annual Eufaula Pilgrimage in April. “It’s a big deal,” he says. The majority of the city’s houses, which were constructed from 1950 to 2000, include an abundance of ranch-style and contemporary dwellings. Eufaula’s median home value is $219,375, which is lower than the national average. Houses along the lake, many of which are vacation homes, tend to be more expensive.

Plentiful trails line Lakepoint State Park and the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge. “You can just walk until you can’t walk anymore. You’d think you’re on the Appalachian Trail,” Baker says.

Restaurants along East Broad Street and South Eufaula Avenue

East Broad Street — commonly referred to by locals as Main Street — is home to local coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques. The 19th-century Bluff City Inn, shuttered for decades, is being renovated and expected to open by 2027. “That’s going to be absolutely the hub of the hub of downtown Eufaula,” Baker says. “It will just turn back the pages of history.” Local and chain restaurants, as well as shopping centers, line South Eufaula Avenue.
