An upbeat neighborhood that celebrates its multicultural community
While Howard Street geographically separates Chicago from the suburbs of Evanston, it brings its namesake community together through multicultural events and a variety of local eateries. The community began its growth in the early 1900s when developers began to capitalize on a neighboring transportation hub, where Chicago and Evanston streetcars rolled through North Clark Street, and Northwestern Elevated Railroad Company trains made stops at the station along Howard Street. Though Chicago’s “L” has kept the area’s commuter spirit alive in the modern day, the community now also offers a vibrant landscape, where residents gather at James Park for annual celebrations like Friends & Family Jamaica Day and explore a mixture of cuisines along the walkable thoroughfare. “It’s a very diverse, complex and interesting neighborhood,” says Lisa Gordon, a local business owner. “People from all over the world live here, and it’s never boring.”
Try new dishes along West Howard Street
An evening stroll along West Howard Street can include stops at Kizin Creole Restaurant for traditional Haitian food or Good To Go Jamaican Cuisine. The latter is full every Friday night when it combines its Caribbean-style fare with the tunes of live bands. For a drink, Peckish Pig, a few doors down, serves up house-made brews out on its spacious patio in the evening and bottomless mimosas with a side of donuts every Saturday morning. Evanston Center, three blocks west of the community, is where residents can pick up groceries from Jewel-Osco and shop at Target. Other nearby retailers include Ross Dress for Less and Dollar Tree, both in the Howard & Western Shopping Center off North Western Avenue. “There’s a new food co-op in Rogers Park that a lot of people, including myself, go to,” Gordon says about Wild Onion Market. The community-owned grocer on North Clark Street, a mile southeast, is open daily and offers fresh produce and goods from local farmers and vendors.
Be sure to check out Good II Go Jamaican restaurant which often hosts DJs and live bands.

James Park's year-round recreational opportunities
Stops at Dobson-Brummel Park on Ashland Avenue and Brummel Park along Elmwood Avenue offer traditional playsets and swings for quick stops while walking or biking through the neighborhood with the little ones. Similarly, James Park’s expansive athletic fields, typically filled with little league soccer, baseball and softball players, sit a block northwest of the neighborhood. After heavy snows, Toboggans and make-shift sleds race down Mount Trashmore in the park’s southwestern corner. Lake Michigan’s coastline runs a mile east of the community, where the rocky shores of Rogers and Howard Beaches offer sprawling water views. A mile south, Loyola Beach provides

Evanston's annual celebrations
James Park also hosts the Annual Friends & Family Jamaica Day in early August. The one-day event fills the park with hundreds of attendees celebrating the country's independence through live music, cultural performances and food from local vendors. Chalk Howard Street takes place at Rogers Park a few weeks later. The popular event covers the park’s sidewalks in colorful 3D chalk creations from artists nationwide. Those wanting to get in on the fun can purchase their square or enjoy live music and refreshments courtesy of Howard Street Chicago. Other Evanston events include the Umbrella Arts Festival, which highlights Asian American history through food and art at Fountain Square in mid-May, and the Juneteenth Parade & Celebrations, which consists of a parade of local performers and a post-march celebration at Ingraham Park.

Ranch-style homes and brick-clad condos
The tunnel-like canopies of old and new-growth trees lead from one residential street to the next. Beneath are rows of cars parked along the street and narrow sidewalks running along either side. Enduring cement walkways lead to the community’s mid-20th-century homes, comprising mostly ranch, Cape Cod and bi-level-style architecture. Many feature large front windows, shrubbery along the exterior and detached garages accessible via backside alleyways. Apartments make up roughly half of the community, alongside stone and brick-clad condos and townhomes, which fill one-fifth of the property mix. These range in price from $100,000 to $350,000, depending on size and condition. Meanwhile, free-standing homes typically sell between $350,000 and $500,000, though larger, recently renovated properties can reach up to $750,000.

CTA's Howard Station commutes
U.S. Route 41, 3 miles southeast, connects commuters to Chicago, a 12-mile drive in the same direction. Similarly, the red line at CTA's Howard Station, a block east, offers hour-long rides into downtown. Chicago O’Hare International Airport’s runway sits a 12.5-mile drive southwest along West Devon Avenue. Those taking classes at Northwestern University can reach its campus along a 3-mile drive north via Asbury Avenue. Meanwhile, Ascension St. Francis Hospital is less than a half-mile north off Ridge Avenue. Residents can also get around locally riding the Pace Bus, which has a series of stops that line Howard Street.
