Quiet escape near downtown with friendly neighbors

Located 3 miles from Downtown Trenton, Hiltonia welcomes homeowners who want to get away from noisy downtown and settle in a community with access to Cadwalader Park, Stacy Park and the Trenton Country Club. Residents can take a short drive over the Delaware River to visit Pennsylvania or take Route 1 up to New York. Not to mention, locals can be downtown for the Patriots Week events in around 10 minutes. Hiltonia homeowners are surrounded by history, such as the Trenton City Museum and Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. “It’s a quiet area with a close community of neighbors. They get together each week, and you don’t see that very often in the Trenton area,” says Marina Echavarria, an experienced Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. Linda Reid, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach, has lived in the area for over 45 years and says, "Hiltonia is a neighborhood, not a subdivision. It's one of the best-kept secrets in Trenton. The area is diverse and inclusive, and we have a civic association that is a strictly social group."

Cape Cods and Tudor-inspired homes near Cadwalader Park

Homes with Cape Cod, Tudor and National designs fill Hiltonia. "There are over 300 homes here, and the neighborhood is isolated," Reid says. Most were built between 1930 and 1950. The majority of residents own their homes, but some rental opportunities occasionally pop up. Those interested in the area can expect to pay $300,000 to $600,000 for a four-bedroom home with a detached garage, moderate yard and paved driveway. Because the neighborhood sits 3 miles from downtown, residents enjoy more peace and quiet than they would have closer to downtown. Some locals might walk to Cadwalader Park when getting out with their pets.

I-295 and U.S Route 1 to nearby states

NJ Transit buses run along Stuyvesant Avenue, particularly routes 609 and 619. Residents can walk along the paved sidewalks to wait at the bus stop. Drivers take U.S. Routes 29 or 1 to go across the Delaware River to Pennsylvania or north to New York. “Major routes like I-295 make it easy to visit Princeton or Lawrence when people want to get away from Trenton for the day,” Echavarria says. The Trenton-Mercer Airport waits 4 miles north of the neighborhood, making it easy to drive up to catch a flight out for vacation.

Fresh air and history at Cadwalader Park

Cadwalader Park, the largest urban park in Trenton, features plenty of green space, a playground and the Trenton City Museum. Runners can use the paved paths while other park visitors use the greenspace to throw the ball with their dogs. Some might stop by the John A. Roebling statue and read about the man who opened an industrial factory in Trenton for building wire rope bridges. Golfers, swimmers and tennis players get memberships at The Trenton Country Club, which was founded in 1897. Famous former members include President Theodore Roosevelt, Charlie Chaplin and Bing Crosby. The private members-only club hosts programs like summer camp, book club, wine club and wedding events. Fishing enthusiasts visit Stacy’s Park to cast their lines into the Delaware River.

Getting groceries at corner stores and local shops

A few locally owned shops like Betty’s Pop Up Shop give locals access to clothing, but most visit Capitol Plaza to shop at Rainbow, Marshalls or dd’s DISCOUNTS. Locals in Hiltonia and the rest of Trenton also shop at corner stores. Places like the Azcona Sanhican Grocery, James Corner Store and Express Grocery & Grill offer grocery options and quick lunch items. “People drive out of the way to get groceries. I know the Roebling Market is a good spot since they have international items,” Echavarria says.

Patriots Week and Trenton City Museum fun

Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie draws in a crowd with its recurring events. Families visit the museum for workshops such as African Mask Making or Wreath Making. The museum also participates in Patriots Week, when locals remember the Battle of Trenton that took place downtown in 1776. Hiltonia locals who want to see the battle reenactments head downtown from December 26th to the 31st.

Public and private schools for Hiltonia kids

Kids often attend Joyce Kilmer Intermediate School for kindergarten through eighth grade. Niche gives Joyce Kilmer Intermediate a D-plus, typical for most Trenton area schools. Students later move on to Trenton Central High School, which gets a C from Niche. The Village Charter School and Daylight-Twighlight High School, a school for teens and adults returning to school, also offer classes for Hiltonia students. “Most people choose private schools for their kids. Some who move into the area don’t have kids, so it’s not an issue.”

State-operated departments nearby

The Trenton Psychiatric Hospital sits in the middle of the neighborhood. This facility has 450 beds and has been standing since the 1840s. Metal fences surround the campus, creating a safety barrier for those who check into the hospital. "The psychiatric hospital isn't very operational anymore. Half of the buildings are empty, so they create a buffer between the homes and the rest of the hospital," Reid says. The Trenton Department of Corrections Offices also sit nearby, behind the Joyce Kilmer Intermediate School.
