About Excelsior Springs, MO

Mineral water gave Excelsior Springs its beginnings

Excelsior Springs, Missouri, has a history as refreshing as its mineral spring water. This community is 30 miles northeast of Kansas City with Route 60 running right through the middle and famed for its spring water, discovered by Travis Mellion, a local Black farmer who first stumbled upon this natural wonder in the late 19th century. This spring water, renowned for its healing properties, played a pivotal role in his daughter’s recovery from a severe case of cervical tuberculosis or as they used to call it, king’s evil. From these beginnings, Excelsior Springs evolved into a renowned spring water tourist destination, gaining further popularity with the extension of the Milwaukee Railroad. The legacy of this town can still be experienced today at the Hall of Waters, now the town hall; it was initially constructed as a mineral water health resort. The town’s history is intertwined with the Fishing River, a source of sustenance tended by indigenous people for millennia.
