More than just a peaceful suburb
A residential neighborhood tucked into the intersection of Interstate 29 and Interstate 94, Prairiewood isn’t just another quiet Fargo bedroom community. Tucked behind the homes and trees that line Prairiewood Drive, the nine-hole Prairiewood Golf Course is one of Fargo’s five public golf courses and welcomes golfers of all skill levels. At the same time, residents only have to trek a mile to be at West Acres Shopping Center, the largest shopping mall in North Dakota, for shopping or indoor activity in the frigid winters. It’s also home to the Roger Maris Museum, a shrine to the Yankee slugger and native Fargoan that draws faithful Yankee fans and history buffs alike. Along with schools featuring a strong variety of curricular, co-curricular and non-curricular activities, Prairiewood offers plenty of conveniences less than 4 miles from Downtown Fargo.

A duffer’s dream
While the tree-lined Prairiewood Public Golf Course has only nine holes, it’s still challenging for beginner and intermediate golfers thanks to strategic water features. It’s easy for Prairiewood residents to stroll over before or after work to get in a quick game – with a dictated pace of play of only 2 hours per group, it doesn’t require the time commitment that a full 18 holes does. For most homeowners, it’s right in their backyard or just across the street. Parks Director Tony Schmitt notes that there is no resident discount; however, yearly season passes and Fall Season passes provide a discount for the avid player.

Mixed housing for a wide range of price points
The western quarter of the neighborhood contains a mix of apartments, condos and townhouses, while single-family homes clad in vinyl and stone surround the golf course. Backyards can sometimes collect the wayward drive, with trees the only barrier between the area of play and residents’ property. Many residents with property that backs up to the course have opted to install privacy fencing; however, some feature patios where they can watch hackers dig themselves out of sandtraps while enjoying a cold beverage and a cookout. Bi-level and rambler homes from the 1970s sit on Prairiewood Drive, a low-traffic sidewalk-lined street that circles the course, with a handful of cul-de-sac offshoots. Single-floor condos with detached garages go for between $85,000 and $125,000; bi-level condos with attached garages command from $225,000 up to $325,000. Single-family homes predating the 1980s get from $325,000 to $525,000, while those built in the 80s and more recently get from $525,000 to $715,000. Aside from the updated features and layouts, newer homes generally have a coveted third stall in the garage, where residents can keep watercraft, snow machines, tools and more.

Major highways and nearby employers
The highways that help put everything in Fargo within a 15-minute drive or less can bring some noise to the homes around the edges of the neighborhood. But for many that call Prairiewood home, it’s worth it for the ease of enjoying not just Fargo, but the nearby West Fargo and Moorhead areas. Public transit is minimal, with stops for MATBUS routes 16 and 18 nearby, so most residents are car-dependent. Downtown Fargo is just under 4 miles away and is generally a drive of 10 minutes or less. Sanford Medical Center is roughly 3 miles west, while Essentia Health is around 3 miles south; these are some of the largest job providers in the city, and both are within 10 minutes of the neighborhood. Similarly, Microsoft’s Great Plains office is 5 miles south, usually a 10-minute commute. Residents heading out of the area for business or pleasure can head 5 miles up I-29 to Hector International Airport, usually a 10-minute drive.

Fargo parks provide year-round fun
With a multipurpose field, basketball court and playground for children, Boler Park is a short walk for many in the western part of the neighborhood. Westgate Park to the north may be closer for those in the eastern half. It has a multipurpose field and playground and is home to the Westgate Park Rink. Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist with the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, says these rinks are flooded in the cold winter months for pick-up hockey, skating and local favorite broomball. While serious players may show up with specialty shoes and modern paddles, some still stick with standard-issue winter boots and the traditional broom. The rink also has warming houses to thaw off in between matches.

A massive mall and cultural cuisine
The neighborhood itself is purely residential, but residents are within a mile of the West Acres Shopping Center. It’s home to over 100 national retailers and chain and franchise restaurants. It’s not just a convenient stop to cover several errands all at once and grab a bite – regional art is displayed throughout, an aquarium and playland provide entertainment for children, and it is home to The Market farmers market, running throughout the summers. Doolittles Woodfire Grill, just to the southeast, focuses on healthy, upscale American favorites while specializing in smokey, woodfired dishes. Spots like Rugsan Cuisine, serving East African dishes, along with Leela Thai Cuisine and El Vaqueros Taqueria and Mexican, show off the cultures that have become a part of Fargo’s food scene. Mehl’s Gluten-Free Bakery bakes up deserts and bread for the gluten-sensitive and is right next to Cash Wise Foods and SCHEELS Home and Hardware, so residents can grab a treat after that pick up groceries and whatever they may need for home maintenance and repairs.
There are various shopping centers, restaurants, and cafes nearby, like West Acres.

Breaking up the winter blues
“Frostival happens in the winter, it’s fairly new – it was a way to offset winter blues, because winters get really long here when you’re sitting in 30-below weather for two or three weeks and you can’t do anything but stay inside,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate. “So in order to combat that, the cities of Fargo and West Fargo came together and put together Frostival, every day there’s something new – we have snow volleyball, ice carving contests, snowshoeing, always hot chocolate and things for the kids.” As with Fargo’s other major events, like the Red River Valley Fair in June and Downtown Fargo Street Fair in July, residents of Prairiewood get out and mingle with folks from across the metro.
