Genesee County 48430, 48451
Fenton’s motto is “Be Closer,” and the city invites residents to be closer to the scenic lakes, local restaurants and each other. “It’s generally considered one of the more desirable places to live in Genesee County due to its small-town feel, highly rated schools, and access to recreational activities,” says Matt Zahn, a Realtor with RE/MAX Select.
“There is a wide range of home types,” Zahn says. “From condos with low maintenance to extravagant million-dollar lake homes.” In between the cozy condos priced around $150,000 and the resort-level elegance of the $1 million and $2 million-dollar lakeside estates, you can find comfortable ranch-style suburban homes and classic Victorian homes with steep roofs and simple trim features near downtown Fenton.
While not a peninsula, Fenton shares the state’s surrounded-by-lakes feel, with Lake Fenton, Silver Lake and Lake Ponemah all joined by Seven Lakes State Park and dozens of smaller lakes. “Locals brag about the abundance of lakes allowing for all sorts of lake activities,” Zahn says, “Including fishing, kayaking, wakeboarding, wake surfing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, and relaxing on a pontoon.”
Many residents have private docks, but Seven Lakes State Park provides plenty of shoreline, multiple boat launches and miles of wooded, waterside trails for a Pure Michigan vacation right outside the city. If a day trip goes by too fast, you can also plan to spend time camping in the state park. From dog-walking to daydreaming, head to the Dauner Martin Nature Sanctuary for relaxingly remote moments, thanks to its 155 acres of mature hardwoods and over 4 miles of trails.
At Tomek-Eastern Elementary School, the highest-rated elementary program in the district, students can choose a fully virtual option to learn from home in a flexible environment. Fenton High School students can compete under Friday night lights as Fenton Tigers in the football team or as Titanium Tigers in the Robotics team. And the 700-student Schmidt Middle School is known for growing students in advanced studies and helping struggling students reach their peak performance.
Downtown Fenton has that classic small-town feel, with eateries and boutique shops next to municipal buildings and riverside trails. “Locals also brag about the number of restaurants and bar options in the area,” Zahn says. “There are also numerous fun downtown activities including music in the park, farmers market, and Applefest.” It’s hard to miss Fenton Fire Hall Taproom and Kitchen, where you can sample hearty barbecue and a full lineup of craft beer in the former city fire hall, an eye-catching structure whose clock tower still watches over the city from the banks of the Shiawassee River.
Head to Crust for lemon meringue cutie pie and other satisfying sweets, as well as house-made bread in a classic establishment owned by the same family that owns The Laundry. Since 1997, the stylish bistro has been serving unforgettable brunch bites, satisfying French onion soup and other European-inspired hits out of a former 1930s laundromat. “Fenton is just an energetic, outdoorsy and picturesque city,” Zahn says.
