Former mill town with great accessibility
Southside Fitchburg, about 30 miles north of Worcester and 60 miles west of Boston, is a neighborhood in the city of Fitchburg. It has access to the Twin Cities Rail Trail, a bike path that connects it to its sister city, Leominster, about 5 miles south, and is a short drive from key highways that lead throughout the state. Plus, everyday amenities in strip malls and local eateries lining downtown are both less than a mile from Southside Fitchburg. “Fitchburg is a great little town with a very New England feel,” says Brenda Cormier, a Realtor with Re/Max Vision who grew up in Leominster and sells homes in both cities. “It’s a former paper mill town, probably past its heyday. But it still has a great community feel. There is still a lot going on in Fitchburg.”

The 5-mile Twin Cities Rail Trail connects Fitchburg to Leominster and is popular with walkers and bikers. A Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority station is nearby, leading riders about 60 miles east to Boston. The trip usually takes about two hours. Wandering Coggshall Park, picking pumpkins at Hollis Hills Farm
Coggshall Park, just south of the neighborhood, spans 250 acres. Pine trees surround the central Mirror Lake, where geese swim in the water and walkers stroll paved paths beside it. A red-topped gazebo appears to float on the lake, and a playground and softball field offer places to get active. The nearby Fitchburg Art Museum – or FAM – offers an indoor, contemplative stroll. Visitors can wander through the museum's rotating and permanent exhibits, including Egyptian artifacts and a gallery dedicated to the museum’s founder and Fitchburg local, Eleanor Norcross. North of the neighborhood, Hollis Hills Farm is a popular weekend excursion at all times of year. “It’s funny that nowadays a farm is used for entertainment and not for necessity,” Cormier says. In the fall, folks pick pumpkins, while live music floats through the air, and berries grow from the bushes in the summer. For a weekend of family fun, the Great Wolf Lodge, a waterpark and hotel, is about 5 miles southwest of the neighborhood.
