Flagstaff suburb in a lush pine forest near downtown
Set in North America’s largest ponderosa pine forest at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, suburban Elk Run holds true to its name, as elk and other wildlife trot across yards during the migratory season. “You probably have the lushest mature pine trees here within city limits,” says Cody Bauer, Realtor with The Foundation Group at Best Flagstaff Homes Realty, who lives in the neighborhood. “And you’re close to the Continental Country Club’s golf course and only 4 miles from downtown Flagstaff.” Parts of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System weave around the neighborhood, while shopping and dining establishments are found a few miles to the west.

League soccer games, a round of golf and swimming
Bordering Elk Run to the south, 28-acre Foxglenn Park is where soccer teams play league games, kids can either play HORSE on the basketball court or run around on the playground; skaters can grind rails at the adjacent skate park. Outside of the neighborhood a few miles to the east, golfers can book a tee time at the Continental Country Club’s public 18-hole course, or take lessons from PGA professionals. “Probably some of the best views of the mountains and pines in Flagstaff are here at this club,” says Bauer. Families can enjoy the scenery at the club’s community pool, or connect more with nature as they’re biking the hilly, mostly paved paths (part of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System) that run along Elk Run’s perimeter.
Semi-custom-built homes without fences
Homes here are primarily semi-custom-built Craftsman- and ranch-style homes from the 1980s and ‘90s. “Many have a rustic appearance to them, with earth-toned wood siding,” says Bauer. “But no two are exactly alike.” Lining wide streets, three-bedroom Craftsman-styles are more contemporary, with cross-gabled roofs that shadow front porches, stone facades under siding and elevated driveways leading to two-car garages, ranging from $550,000 to $700,000. Ranch-styles tend to have two bedrooms, stone-edged flower beds, walkways leading to front doors and back yards and up to three-car garages, selling between $550,000 and $650,000. The HOA outlaws fences here, but as a result, residents can watch Elk pass through their pine tree-filled yards.

Fun at the rec center
Residents head to the Continental Country Club’s Bear Paw Recreation Center for weekly activities. “There’s so many things to do here,” says Lori Anna Harrison, real estate agent for My Home Group, who was born and raised in Flagstaff, “like bridge on Thursday nights, painting classes and even knitting classes, which I’ve actually taught.” Kids can attend craft days during the summer or play bingo, while intermediate and advanced female pickleball players can play a round robin-style tournament every Wednesday.
A 1950s diner, pasta with craft cocktails and a nearby mall
Miz Zip’s Cafe, adorned with a neon “Let’s Eat” sign and a rusty 1950s Chevrolet pickup, sits outside the neighborhood on the western side of Route 66; a local favorite since 1952, this restaurant serves warm breakfasts, lunch sandwiches and homemade desserts. Bauer enjoys downtown’s Shift Kitchen & Bar – a James Beard Foundation Award semi-finalist in 2023 – with pasta and pork chop meals, along with craft cocktails and after-dinner drinks. Shift also offers pastries once a month, donating leftovers to a local charity. Grocery options are found within 4 miles north and southwest, including a Safeway and Fry’s, and the Flagstaff Mall 4 miles northeast houses department stores like Dillard’s.

Mentorship program at Flagstaff Unified district schools
Local kids may attend Flagstaff Unified district schools, including Knoles Elementary, which earns an overall B-grade from Niche, and Mount Elden Middle, which earns a B-minus. At B-minus Coconino High, juniors and seniors can join the Link Leadership program to help transitioning freshmen learn strategies for success throughout their high school careers; Link Leaders will lead new student tours, teach freshmen about peer pressure and are encouraged to volunteer outside of school.
Nearby interstates, Amtrak and bike lanes
Interstate 40 sits roughly a mile north, while Interstate 17 is about 6 miles southwest, and Historic Route 66 is found about 3 miles north. Elk Run Street and Deer Crossings Road are a few of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares, and East Soliere Avenue leads about 4 miles west to downtown Flagstaff. Mountain Line Public Transit buses make stops along Elk Run’s northwestern end, while Amtrak trains depart from the Visitors Center station downtown, and bike lanes run along the neighborhood’s perimeter. “Even though Elk Run is a walkable and bike-friendly community, most residents here prefer driving their cars, especially to places like area restaurants.” Flagstaff Medical Center sits about 5 miles west, while Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is 9 miles southwest.
Fire prevention
Forest fires are a reality for residents of Elk Run, and needles from area pine trees can ignite quickly. "Cleaning up pine needles is the number one way to help prevent the spread of fires here," says Lori Anna Harrison, real estate agent with My Home Group, who grew up in Flagstaff. "They'll clog gutters, pile on roofs and can even prevent proper water drainage, so homeowners have to clean consistently."

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
