Rural living outside of Flagstaff
Set 8 miles south of Flagstaff, at the northern end of the Coconino National Forest, Mountainaire is a rural residential retreat, its single-family homes secluded in thickets of towering pine trees. “People are in Mountainaire because they want to be more in the woods; they don’t want to be in a subdivision," says Eileen Taggart, a Realtor with Re/Max Fine Properties and over 17 years of experience. However, says Jason Shafor, a Realtor with Exp Realty and Flagstaff local, “Residents don't want to be too far out. It’s a really easy drive into downtown Flagstaff.” Businesses are scarce here, so residents head into Flagstaff to run most errands; for easy access north to the city, Mountainaire is bordered west by Interstate 17.

Secluded single-family homes in the woods
Homes here typically range between $300,000 and $600,000 and aren't governed by homeowner’s associations. “The price point is good for first-time homebuyers and for second-time homebuyers,” Shafor says. Single-family homes with dirt-and-gravel-packed driveways dot rustic tree-lined streets; homes here are mostly single-story ranch-style from the late 20th-century or Craftsman-inspired homes built after 2000. “There are some homes that were bought and bulldozed to build newer homes, and you’ll still see older homes too,” Shafor says. “It’s a hodgepodge of different things.” One-tenth-acre lots are common, and Shafor says lot sizes here tend to be smaller than in Kachina Village. A two-bedroom ranch-style home can start at $350,000, while a split-level Craftsman-style home can cost $550,000.

Rustic shopping and dining
“There’s a little store and tavern and that’s all you have in Mountainaire,” Shafor says. For basic groceries and snacks, residents can stop into the Mountainaire Country Store. Next door, the Mountainaire Tavern offers craft beer and comfort food, like pizza and BBQ pork ribs; the tavern also hosts live music and neighborhood gatherings throughout the year, like cornhole tournaments and community fundraisers. “A lot of locals enjoy the tavern, and even people from Flagstaff do Harley rides out there to grab a pizza and a beer,” Shafor says. For more dining options and traditional grocery stores, residents head into Flagstaff, about 8 miles north. Depending on traffic, “You can get to the Bashas’ grocery store in about 10 minutes,” Shafor says.
