Charming downtown, 19th-century architecture
At less than 50 miles away from New York City, Chester-Flanders exudes a rural atmosphere that may make it hard to believe residents are still just an hour from the Big Apple. “Not many people know about Chester-Flanders, at least not in terms of what the lifestyle is like here,” says Maura Young, Realtor with Weichert Realtors and longtime resident of the area. “We have rolling farmlands, some of which are historic and some of which are still active farms to this day – and it’s all just a hop away from the city.” With a charming downtown that shows off the area’s 19th-century architecture and homes that are tucked away enough to provide residents ample peace and quiet, Chester-Flanders offers rural living without giving up access to urban amenities.
Traditional styles on expansive lots
Though technically separate entities, Chester and Flanders are close enough – and similar enough in style – that they’re referred to jointly. True to its history as farmland, the area exudes pastoral beauty and features homes on thickly wooded lots. The room afforded to homeowners in Chester-Flanders means that homes are large – often four bedrooms or more – and sit on even larger lots. Styles include Colonial Revivals, ranch-style, and split-level homes ranging in price from $550,000 to $875,000. Larger custom estates, often on multiple acres of land, range from $1 million to $2.5 million. Particularly grand estates – the kind sitting on dozens of acres with pools and a grand entryway – can reach prices as high as $6.5 million.
Athletics at West Morris High
Students in the Chester-Flanders area are a part of the Chester School District and can begin at Dickerson School – which serves pre-kindergarten through second grade and earns a B-plus from Niche. From there, students can wrap up elementary at A-rated Bragg School before moving on to A-rated Black River Middle School. West Morris Central High, which also earns an A from Niche, is considered one of the top schools in the state for young athletes, with both its football and ice hockey teams winning championships in 2023.
Historic gristmills and scenic trails
“Chester-Flanders is a very outdoorsy kind of place,” says Young. “There are so many options for getting out and having fun – from fishing, to hiking and even birdwatching.” Residents can head to Black River County Park and Chester Furnace Historic Site for a number of trails that allow scenic hikes through the area’s rural landscape. On the other side of Route 206 is Flanders Valley Golf Course, a public course with an outdoor events space. Locals can also enjoy waterfall views at Black River County Park, where Cooper Gristmill awaits visitors at the trail entrance. As one of the remaining water-powered flour mills in the state, Cooper Gristmill maintains its colonial brick exterior and offers property tours. “With all the rolling hills, forests and pretty landscapes, even just a drive around can be a great way to appreciate the classically rural beauty of the area.”
Shopping and dining on Main Street
Main Street is the go-to destination for boutique shopping and dining, where many of the buildings maintain an 1800s atmosphere. Residents with a sweet tooth can get a sundae at Taylor’s Ice Cream Parlor. For dinner, Fresco Mexican offers authentic cuisine while PH Steakhouse is in what was once a historic inn – the Federal-style Publick House Hotel. For groceries and other essentials, the Shop Rite shopping center just off Route 206 features a ShopRite grocery store, and includes several chain eateries and a HomeGoods. Alstede Farms and Stony Hills Farm Market provide fresh produce and seasonal flowers to the community. “Farming is a big deal in Chester-Flanders,” says Young. “We love being able to rely on local farms for our fresh fruits and veggies, so farmers markets are always a hit here.”
Commuting on U.S. Route 206, I-287
U.S. Route 206 runs through Chester-Flanders, connecting to Interstate 80 to the north and Interstate 78 to the south. Locals can also easily access Route 78 and I-287. Train access allows residents to reach NYC within roughly an hour, while bus stops make getting around Chester-Flanders and its surrounding area straightforward.
Chester Harvest Festival, Spring Craft Show
In addition to the regular programs, events and resources on offer at Main Street’s Chester Library, the community puts on annual events such as October’s Chester Harvest Festival and June’s Chester Spring Craft Show.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
