A tight-knit community without an HOA in northeast Florence
In January 2024, a record-breaking snowstorm swept across North Alabama, transforming the city of Florence into a winter wonderland. With schools and most businesses closed for over a week, residents of the city's northeast Edgemont neighborhood fully embraced the unusually cold weather. Snowmen began popping up throughout the community, in front yards under giant oak trees and at the pocket park on Ingleside Avenue. Neighbors hosted driveway potlucks while kids and even some parents took turns sledding down the sloping residential streets. A snowstorm like this may be rare in Edgemont, but community events occur regularly, thanks to the volunteer neighborhood association. "We don't have a homeowners association or anything like that, but we take turns hosting neighborhood watch meetings at our houses at least once a month," says Gregory Snyder, a longtime Edgemont resident. He says neighbors get together to hold street-wide yard sales and plan trick-or-treating routes. Holiday events, like the annual Easter Egg Hunt, take place in the heart of the community at Edgemont United Methodist Church.

Modest ranch-style homes from the 1950s and '60s
Most homes in Edgemont were built between the 1950s and '60s. True to the times, they usually feature split-level or ranch-style architecture with narrow carports jutting out from one side. Some homes reflect more of the Cape Cod style with gabled dormer windows and screened-in porches. About half of the houses have recently remodeled kitchens and newly laid wooden floors. The others are older but still well-maintained. Thick oak and hickory trees create natural canopies above the low-pitched roofs, helping to keep homes and yards cool during the summertime. Lots, usually ranging from a quarter to half an acre, offer plenty of room for folks to add backyard tool sheds, swing sets or trampolines. Edgemont's home prices are on par with similar nearby suburbs, with listings usually ranging from $150,000 to $350,000.
Due to the topography of Edgemont, Split-level homes are scattered throughout the area.
Edgemont has a few different architectural styles including Cape Cods.

Edgemont sits at the intersection of State Route 157 and U.S. Highway 72
One of Edgemont's greatest appeals is its central location. It's less than 2 miles east of the downtown shops and restaurants on Court Street, and Florence Mall is just 2.5 miles west. The city's main hospital, North Alabama Medical Center, offers 24/7 emergency services about 2 miles south. From here, it's only a 5-mile drive to the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport, which offers daily connecting flights to Charlotte, NC.
A lot of folks commute to larger nearby cities for work, so highway access is of particular importance. Luckily, Edgemont hugs one of the busiest intersections in Florence, where State Route 157 meets U.S. Highway 72. From here, it's only 70 miles to Downtown Huntsville and about 120 miles to Nashville.
Cox Creek Park hosts the local farmers market three times a week
Edgemont is about 2 miles from Deibert Park, one of the city's largest green spaces. Its paved pathways trek across 70 acres of gently rolling hills. A farm-themed playscape sits next to a large picnic pavilion at the park's entrance. The Children's Museum of the Shoals is just a short walk from here. The Florence-Lauderdale Farmer's Market takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning about a mile north of Edgemont at Cox Creek Park. It's also home to the city's skate park, 12 lighted tennis courts and the University of North Alabama Softball Complex. The county's largest bowling alley, Lauderdale Lanes, sits directly across from the neighborhood along Highway 72.
