Historical markers and schoolhouse in Timrod Park
When motorists drive south on Irby Street, about a mile from Downtown Florence, they will see a thick canopy of lush trees that make up the community of Timrod Park. Beloved for its park and proximity to downtown, the neighborhood is named after Civil War-era poet, teacher and South Carolina native Henry Timrod. Following the war, he taught in a building now known as the Henry Timrod Schoolhouse. The one-room building was relocated to its present site in the heart of Timrod Park, where numerous historical markers tell the story of the man and the schoolhouse.

Modest ranch-style houses and bungalows typically range between $140,000 and $250,000 and include up to a quarter of an acre. Larger custom homes located next to the park usually cost from $500,000 to $800,000 and include a fenced yard and amenities such as pools, semi-circle driveways and modern backyard patios. Pickleball and tennis courts throughout Timrod Park
The 18-acre public park is one of the largest city parks in Florence and offers various opportunities for recreation. Tennis players appreciate the 14-lighted courts, while pickleball players have seven courts to choose from. The park includes an expansive playground, an amphitheater, a gazebo and several covered picnic tables. Behind that is a line of lush trees with a small creek running along the park. Trails flank both sides of the creek, and a small wooden walking bridge goes across. Outside of Timrod sits Lucas Park, a few blocks away. Lucas offers open green space and walking paths. The Rail Trail is one of Florence’s most used and well-known outdoor spaces. The former railroad track-turned-natural trail runs for about 5 miles with several entry points and a nature loop.
