About Flossmoor, IL

Village on the tracks

The village of Flossmoor is on the Metra commuter rail line about 30 miles south of Chicago. Within the area's confines are local businesses, places to unwind downtown and two golf courses. “The village of Flossmoor was built around golf courses almost 100 years ago,” says Vickie Stevenson, a Realtor with eXp Realty with nearly ten years of experience. “In 2024, the village will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.”

Downtown shops

The Shops on Sterling is a collection of unique boutiques and locally owned stores across from the Metra station. “It started as a large real estate office, then was sectioned off for individual businesses to open,” Stevenson says. For the vinyl record lover, that format is alive and well at Conservatory Vintage & Vinyl with rare, pre-owned and new vinyl records. There’s also midcentury modern furniture and home décor. The Bistro on Sterling has indoor and outdoor seating during warm weather to enjoy their daily specials. It’s a popular place to be, so reservations are strongly suggested. At the station, a portion was renovated to become the Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery, open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

Recreation galore

Coyote Run Golf Course is one of two golf courses in the immediate Flossmoor area. It’s a public 18-hole, par 71 course. The course has three tee boxes on each hole. Most feature bent fairways and greens. There are water hazards on 11 of the 18 holes. Lessons are available from one of three golf professionals. Before or after play, Wiley’s Grill is available with salads, sandwiches, tacos or pizza. Flossmoor Golf Club dates to 1899 and was one of the first clubs established in the Midwest. The members-only course has four par-5 and ten par-4 holes among the 18. Other outdoor recreation opportunities include Millennium Park, which has a splash pad open from early June through Labor Day. It’s available when temperatures are 70 degrees or warmer. Other amenities in the park include a walking path, memorial garden, soccer field and playground. Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center is a 38-acre nature preserve with treetop zip-line courses and trails leading toward wildflowers, birds and other animals.

Community feel

Stevenson has lived in Flossmoor for a long time and loves the diversity in the area. “We’re seeing many younger people moving here because of that,” she says. “This is also the kind of place where people stay in their homes for decades. They’ll often move from their house into a retirement community.”
