A community that cares
In Folsom, about 20 miles from Sacramento, Prairie Oaks is a neighborhood big on education and community pride. The most notable example of this is how the neighborhood rallies behind the students at Folsom High School. “Our sporting events are packed with people from the community that don’t have kids in school and aren’t alumni,” says Administrative Assistant to the Principal Maureen Harris. “We have booster clubs, but not just for sports. Our marching band is huge and always has new uniforms and instruments, and last year, the boosters sent our jazz band to perform in New Orleans.” It’s easy to see why the residents of Prairie Oaks would value investing in education. Over 63% of the neighborhood’s population has a college degree, compared to the national average of 34%, and 27% have advanced degrees, compared to 13% nationwide. “People absolutely move here to be close to Folsom High,” says Harris. “There’s even a huge waiting list for people outside the boundaries that want their kids to come here.”
Folsom High School shines
Kids in Prairie Oaks attend the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District, beginning at Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary School. Niche gives Gallardo Elementary an A grade and ranks it as the top public elementary school in Sacramento County. Next up is Sutter Middle School, which also has an A grade on Niche. Teens head to Folsom High School, which has a perfect A-plus Niche rating and holds events throughout the year to celebrate its students. “Folsom-Bration is a massive art show that takes over the library and people come from all over the neighborhood to see it,” says Harris. “I mean, I did art in high school, but we never had a show or anything like this, but these incredible events happen at Folsom High.”
