Kaiser Steel heritage and residential streets
South Fontana offers residential areas and a large industrial section, which some consider to be a defining feature of the area. "It's actually one of the oldest parts of Fontana. It has the deepest history, back to when things were first starting," says Monique Carter, the city's communications and marketing manager. "Fontana was born out of a steel mill." Kaiser Steel opened in 1941 and closed in 1983, but the spirit of industry lives on in Fontana.
East of the warehouses and distribution centers, South Fontana becomes residential, with suburban-style streets. Some streets curve or have cul-de-sacs; many have well-maintained sidewalks and custom landscaping in front of contemporary single-family homes. "It's a beautiful community," says Susana Uriarte, a Realtor with Legacy Homes Management Inc. "There are gorgeous trees and views of the mountains."

Manufactured homes are found in communities like Capri Mobile Estates and Fontana Mobile Home Park. Prices range from $75,000 to $225,000 and come with monthly land lease fees of $742 to $945.

Ruth O. Harris Middle School earns a C, and Jurupa Hills High School earns a B. The high school was among two Fontana United District schools recognized in 2023's California Student Aid Commission's Race to Submit campaign for financial aid application completion rates and college readiness.

Omnitrans, Metrolink, traffic trails
On streets like Sierra and Slover avenues, there are stops for Omnitrans buses. From the Fontana Metrolink Station downtown, the trip west to Los Angeles is about 55 miles. Airports within 10 miles are Ontario International Airport (OIA), which offers major airlines, and the San Bernardino International Airport, for commercial, general aviation and cargo flights.
As part of a regional hub for trucking, South Fontana's industrial section includes logistics services companies, distribution centers and Southwest Industrial Park. "There is a large propensity of people from Fontana who work in that area, but not necessarily from the surrounding neighborhood," Carter says.
The junction of Interstates 10 and 15 is nearby, and Carter says residential traffic causes more issues than the truck traffic, which is diverted. "We have traffic trails; these are roads that only the trucking traffic can stay on," she says. "When you get off the freeway, certain streets have their own specified truck routes."

South Fontana Park, Mary Vagle Nature Center
Fontana is 42 square miles, and in that space, it has 50 parks and 13 community centers, six of which have pools, Carter says. "That's 1.2 parks per square mile." Don Day Neighborhood Center on Live Oak Avenue offers dance, gymnastics, martial arts and a Tiny Tots program for kids ages 3 to 5.
South Fontana Park, planned for over a decade, had its grand opening in March 2023. The $17-million facility, focused on sports, has turf fields for soccer and football, a walking path, a fitness zone, and an inclusive playground with accessible play features, ramps and safety surfacing.
Weather permitting, the Fontana Farmers Market is held Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at nearby Southridge Park. It's one of two farmers markets in Fontana; the other is Sundays at Fontana Park, about 8 miles to the north.
South of Jurupa Avenue is the Mary Vagle Nature Center, a 161-acre wildlife refuge with miles of walking trails. The center offers educational displays and programs about local ecology and wildlife. The Jurupa Hills North Trail also passes through the park, winding its way 2.5 miles up to the top of Jurupa Mountain, with an elevation of slightly over 2,200 feet.

Spring Street Night Market, Oak Quarry golf
One of the most popular events in Fontana is the Spring Street Night Market, held several times a year. "It's an event for the whole city, with vendors, food and entertainment," Carter says. "Though people living in South Fontana will need to cross over the 10." Citrus, Cyprus and Sierra avenues have interstate overpasses leading from South Fontana to what's known as the central core, roughly the area between Interstate 10 and state Route 210.
Carter says If anyone is looking for golfing, they might go to Oak Quarry Golf Club. The golf club has received many top ratings, including being named No. 25 out of the top 100 U.S. golf courses by GolfLink. Daily bookings are available, and there's a 7,200-square-foot clubhouse. The Restaurant at Oak Quarry features breakfast and lunch daily and dinner Thursday through Saturday.

Environment concerns, wildfire risks
The industrial presence in Fontana has created some challenges in terms of environmental pollution. In 2021, the State of California Attorney General's office sued Fontana for violating the California Environmental Quality Act for developing warehouses in low-income areas. As part of a legal settlement in 2022, the city enacted new regulations to curb air pollution, including buffer zones and drought-tolerant plants around warehouse projects. Solar power is required as the primary electricity source for new warehouse developments over 400,000 square feet, equipment must be zero emission, and loading docks cannot be within 300 feet of homes, hospitals, and schools.
Wildfires, due to the region's climate, are a risk year-round. The city of Fontana has published a wildfire action plan, urging adequate preparation for this risk. Steps to create a defensible home include complying with the County of San Bernadino brush clearance requirements, maintaining yards and trees, using fire-resistant materials in home remodeling, and keeping flammable and combustible plants and items away from doors and windows.
