Ford Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois. Established in the early 20th century as an agricultural hub, the village industrialized by the 1950s, boosting its population. Incorporated in 1949 as East Chicago Heights, the village was renamed Ford Heights in 1987, acknowledging the nearby historic Ford Model T plant. Over the years, Ford Heights has been a testament to resilience and community spirit, with residents continuously working together to improve their neighborhood and uplift each other in times of adversity.

Most homes in Ford Heights stand west of Route 30 on a cluster of loosely gridded, delicately forested streets. These were mainly built in the mid-to-late 20th century and exhibit popular contemporary styles, especially split-levels and ranch-style builds. A few single-level, 21st-century bungalows also appear in this area. Simple, vinyl-sided ramblers also populate the southeastern section, along with a few dozen mobile homes. The latter start at around $40,000 for move-in-ready units. A $100,000 to $150,000 price tag might get you a three-bedroom ranch-style home with recent repairs. Spend over $150,000, and you might land a four-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot home with an attached, single-car garage and sparkling renovations.

Ford Heights serves the educational needs of approximately 1,700 students within Community Consolidated Schools District 168. Students start their academic careers at Wagoner Elementary School for Pre-K through second grade and Strassburg Elementary from third through fifth grade. Secondary students attend Rickover Junior High and Bloom Trail High School. Bloom Trail earns an overall Niche score of C-plus with diversity, college preparatory initiatives and sports earning the highest accolades. Ford Heights educators have an average of 15 years of teaching experience and take pride in inspiring, challenging and supporting students to help them achieve their personal potential. Students can extend their learning beyond the classroom by participating in year-round activities at Nancy McConathy Public Library, such as story time and crafts or kids cooking classes.

The village is located just east of Chicago Heights, where locals can shop for their groceries and daily essentials at the Jewel-Osco or Save A Lot. For some classic American barbecue fare, stop by Jolee’s Bar-B-Q and catering, which has been serving the community since 2017. Here you can savor a combo platter stacked with wings and rib tips, before satisfying your sweet tooth with a serving of warm peach cobbler or banana pudding. For a hot cup of coffee and a comforting breakfast to start your day, swing by Java Sip and order a plate of eggs, toast, bacon, grits and pork sausage.

Village residents have a 14-acre park with a playground, baseball field, picnic area smack dab in the center of their community. If you’re looking to venture a bit further out, there’s the 20-acre Ford Heights Community Park. The space is about six miles from Ford Heights and has a soccer field, baseball field, tennis court, basketball court and a walking trail. For those looking for an even more prominent spot to spend time outdoors, nearby Wampum Lake Wood Forest Preserve is a 1,200-acre preserve with hiking trails, a fishing pond and a picnic area. All of the parks offer a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. Whether you are looking for a place to play with your children, have a picnic, or go for a hike, there is a park in Ford Heights or nearby that can suit your needs.
