A suburban sprawl north of Baltimore

As its name implies, Bel Air North is an expansive rural area located on the north side of Bel Air, Maryland. While still packed with woodland, open fields and farmland, recent years have seen residences and subdivisions built up throughout the community. “Forest Hill borders the neighborhood to the north, and that’s becoming a big commercial center,” says Buddy Redmer, Realtor with Keller Williams and area resident of 15 years. “With the new construction, it’s becoming your typical suburban sprawl.” This growth ensures that residents of Bel Air North have access to all the essentials of any modern neighborhood, including retail hubs and highly-rated schools, without having to sacrifice closeness to the quietude of Maryland’s natural landscape.

The winding roads of Bel Air North

All through the winding streets of Bel Air North, prospective homebuyers will find a mix of Colonial-inspired townhouses and single-family homes with well-manicured lawns. Despite its more rural reputation, recent construction has expanded the neighborhood. “Bel Air North used to be a little quieter,” Redmer says. “Lately though there’s been significant development, so it all sort of blends together.” Buyers will find four-bedroom brick townhouses available starting at $280,000, three-bedroom Colonial Revivals with two-car garages for $550,000, and even brand-new five-bedroom Modern Traditional houses for prices that soar to $1.25 million.

The King and Queen Seat

Residents of Bel Air North are just 7.5 miles from one of Maryland’s oldest state parks. “Rocks State Park is very close by, so a lot of people head up there to go hiking,” Redmer says. “The King and Queen Seat Trail is famous.” The park comes alive during the summer, when casual hikers and experienced rock climbers flock to the 190-foot outcrops known as the King and Queen Seat. Dogs, children and grown-ups alike splash in the natural pools beneath the waterfall while friends and family prepare hot dogs on the picnic area grills, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The nearest Target is available 4.6 miles away at Harford Mall, which has remained a retail destination in the area since 1973. Locals have their choice of casual eateries, but one name stands above the rest. “Vagabond Sandwich Company is downtown,” Redmer says. “It’s a really good deli with a lot of unique creations. There are almost always lines around the corner at lunchtime.” The Nashville Hot Clucker sandwich is among the highly praised menu items, served with chips covered in the house seasoning blend.

Commuting into Baltimore

While further removed from other parts of Bel Air, neighbors in North enjoy access to Route 1, which connects 32 miles south to Baltimore. Interstate 95 and Pulaski Highway are also viable options, providing the most direct route to Baltimore Washington International Airport, a 40-mile trip. Residents should be prepared for traffic through the Harbor Tunnel, however, given the recent loss of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

First Fridays and the Aberdeen Ironbirds

Just 3 miles from the neighborhood, Bel Air’s First Fridays draw monthly crowds with vendor fairs, restaurant specials and live music. Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, 14 miles east in Aberdeen, plays host to minor league baseball team the Aberdeen Iron Birds, a favorite among local sports fans.
