Beechmont community with heart
In 2013, a Cherry Grove high schooler took a job at a mattress store. His task was to spin an advertisement on Beechmont Avenue — that was the basic requirement, at least. Wanting to put in the extra effort, he started dancing with the sign, and he never stopped. He boogied every weekday for eight hours, and soon enough, he was locally beloved.
When community members heard he was trying to raise money for college tuition, they took action. A hundred flash mobbers gathered at his street corner, joining in the dance and cheering him on. But more than that, they had raised the money themselves as a thank you. His positivity and good spirit had inspired them.
This story is representative of Cherry Grove, where people take care of each other, and this sense of community is a draw for long-time residents and newbies alike. “A lot of people have been here since the 1970s and 80s, when the neighborhood was formed,” says 30-year Realtor Sue Wahl, who has owned two houses in the area. “Families move here, too, because of the top-rated schools.”

20th-century homes with partially wooded lots
Roaming the narrow sidewalks of Cherry Grove, walkers will find split-levels and brick ranch-styles set away from wide streets. These late 20th-century homes aren’t renovated in most cases, but long-time owners have probably taken care of the place. New buyers can enjoy attached garages and wide front lawns framed with a few mulch beds and occasional trees. More forested backyards are likely fenced-in and have room for a dog to play while owners watch on raised decks. Though they might need some work, two-bedrooms are in the $150,000 to $200,000 range. Three-beds will progress to $300,000, and four-beds are likely around the $350,000 mark.

The city is almost always unprepared for winter weather, and we have experienced a few droughts. Nothing major, but fall lasts forever here.

Living outside the city means being far from any stores or restaurants. The restaurants here are decent, retail stores tend to be decent, however cleanliness can vary and public restrooms are not optimal. There are a lot of "mom-and-pop" shops in Greensboro and smaller clothing stores which adds nice variety. Big stores like Macy's, Old Navy, Target, and Walmart are still really popular here but we do also have more of a balance than other cities.
