Most people who live in Fort Collins are within 5 miles of downtown, and the bike lanes here make it convenient.”

Summers in Downtown Fort Collins are especially bustling, with regular events and live music. “In the summer we’re all about beer, bikes and bands,” Houlton says. “That’s one of our sayings across town. There are tons of breweries in the area and we have a huge music and arts scene.” Equinox Brewing has 18 seasonally rotating craft beers that can be enjoyed with live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Coopersmith’s Pub and Brewing is two blocks north and, along with its extensive list of brews, has pub fare and pool tables. The Union Bar and Soda Fountain has classic comfort food, milkshakes and malts alongside an extensive list of hand-crafted cocktails. For groceries, Lucky’s Market and Target are both a short drive south along College Avenue.

A music-forward community
“On Thursday nights in the summer, there is live music in Old Town Square,” says Houlton. “A lot of our music scene is supported by Pat Stryker, from the free concerts to the painted pianos that dot the city.” Stryker is a local philanthropist and founder of the Bohemian Foundation, which supports efforts to strengthen communities at the local and national levels. The Thursday Night Live concert series runs for 14 weeks throughout the summer and showcases Colorado musicians from a wide range of genres. The Taste of Fort Collins festival is each June in Washington Park and has hosted renowned artists from Rick Springfield and Andy Grammer to Smash Mouth and Nelly.

Lee Martinez Community Park has facilities for baseball, tennis, and basketball along with a large playground and paved walking paths. Interstate 25 lies just east of the city and can take travelers about 45 miles north to Cheyenne, Wyoming or 65 miles south to Denver.
