A working community outside Downtown Fort Wayne
The proximity of Greater McMillen Park's mid-century homes to an established rail line and one of the city's industrial-work centers is a reminder of Fort Wayne's decades-old connection to working-class culture. “There’s definitely a lot of jobs around there,” says Realtor Jack Fitzgerald of eXp Realty LLC, referring to the neighborhood's northern fringes, continuing north beyond Pontiac Street toward Wayne Trace. “If you are in manufacturing, you’re super close to plenty of work.” Conversely, most of the neighborhood's homes are concentrated south of Pontiac Street, within walking distance to one of the city's largest parks.

Ranch-style homes were built from 1940s-1960s
The 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s brought three- and four-bedroom homes to Greater McMillen Park, many of them with private driveways, attached garages and lots of about one-tenth of an acre. Traditional brick and more modern vinyl-sided ranch-style homes are priced between $50,000 and $170,000. Prices in Greater McMillen Park have remained relatively low, mostly due to southeast Fort Wayne’s largely industrial footprint. Nebraska, for example, is a neighboring community whose homes can fetch up to $330,000. To encourage Fort Wayne residents to invest in a home, the city decided to invest in them. In 2010, then-Mayor Tom Henry announced a plan to dispense $300,000 to lower- and moderate-income households in the form of down payment assistance. “This area will support what they call low or moderate density,” says Realtor Jay Howell of Red Howell Associates, Inc., referring to the homes and the relative space between each. Down payment assistance typically tops out at $5,000 per household.
