Oakdale is truly a tightly-knit residential area

Whether Oakdale’s trees are blazing orange in the fall or bare in the winter, the community itself is vibrant year-round. “This neighborhood is one of the most popular within the ‘07 zip code because of the historic homes, tree-lined streets and great sense of community,” says Realtor Ben Wahli of 4th Street Real Estate. Oakdale Drive anchors the neighborhood from east to west as one of the zip code’s most well-known streets. Fairfield Avenue joins Oakdale Drive at an intersection, running north to south and connecting locals to other neighborhoods along the thoroughfare. “Oakdale is different because it’s set on one street all the way down, so the sense of community is block by block,” says Wahli. Private parties and alfresco dinners are not uncommon. “Gatherings are usually more intimate. Sometimes, there will even be a string quartet from the Philharmonic performing.”

Weekends are best spent at Packard Park or the Foster Park Golf Course

Oakdale is uniquely placed for maximum outdoor fun. “There are a number of parks in the area that residents take advantage of,” says Wahli. Formerly the Packard Piano and Organ Factory, the historic Packard Park features a softball diamond, playground, pavilion and Indiana’s first outdoor futsal courts on its 4.5 acres. “The area just received quite a bit of funding for the development and preservation of Packard Park,” says Wahli. Plans include improving the facilities and promoting recreational activities. To the west of Oakdale, Foster Park spans 255 acres and boasts stunning flower beds that attract people from all over the county when in bloom. Along with its facilities like tennis and pickleball courts, the park also draws golfers to its 18-hole Foster Park Golf Course.

Restaurants and shops are locally owned and operated

Oakdale has its fair share of spots for locals to grab a bite. Folks can start their morning by grabbing a brew at the Friendly Fox, which also offers a lunch and dinner menu. Bravas Burgers serves hot dogs and hamburgers in a mural-covered structure on Fairfield Avenue. The restaurant made the list of the Best Burgers in Fort Wayne. Oakdale residents benefit from a local grocer, Antonuccio’s Italian Market, which is within biking distance on the community’s south end.

Buyers can get historic homes for prices below the national average

Buyers will find various historic architectural styles spanning the early to mid-20th Century. These include Victorian and Colonial Revivals, foursquares and worker’s cottages. “A unique aspect of this neighborhood is that porches commonly have arched roofs and round columns with historic caps,” Wahli says. With a median home price of $178,750, most single-family homes fall between $100,000 and $220,000. More spacious three- and four-bedroom homes from the early 20th century fetch beyond $400,000.

Oakdale residents have two options for live music

Historic homes and outdoor parks aren’t Oakdale’s only features. Just a short drive west across the St. Marys River is the Clyde Theatre, which hosts big-name artists and national acts. Folks head next door for a more intimate venue with good eats and local acts. “There’s a smaller attached venue called the Club Room, which has nightly music,” says Associate Broker Justin Herber of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. Quality cocktails and beats are available just blocks away from most homes.

Fort Wayne's air and water quality

There are few risks regarding the environment in the greater Fort Wayne area. Poor air quality is the primary concern that garners media attention. In recent years, elevated levels of mercury were found in the city’s air and water. In addition to harmful levels of mercury, e. coli and dissolved oxygen have also been discovered in some bodies of water and are periodically tracked by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
