A Southeast Fort Wayne neighborhood in transition
Oxford is a place of potential in southeast Fort Wayne, less than 3 miles from downtown. “It’s a district that is being completely revitalized,” says Tiffiny Holmes, a Realtor with the House To Holmes KW team at Keller Williams Realty Group. "There’s a lot of energy being put into reviving the community and its spaces.”
One driving force in the neighborhood is the Oxford Community Association, which coordinates projects and events in Oxford and works to bring more recreation and resources to the neighborhood. Launched in 1972, the organization has advocated for neighborhood improvements and the support of local businesses. Another driver of change is the city’s Southeast Strategy Update, which was adopted in 2021 and identified several key areas on which the city could focus — among them, Oxford Street and Pontiac Street in the neighborhood.
Upgrades such as landscaping, lighting, public art and improved sidewalks are planned. The neighborhood is also the future site of an almost $20 million Neighborhood Health clinic, which will provide medical, behavioral and dental services. “The city has struggled with the south side of town being a blighted area. The residents never gave up on it, and the city is backing them,” says Mary Sherer, a broker at ERA Crossroads and team lead of the Hoosier Heartland Team. Holmes says Oxford is perfect for people looking for a lower-priced home in a neighborhood with a lot of possibilities. “It’s a neighborhood that’s in transition, but has so much potential,” Holmes says.

Shopping and dining options in new and improved business corridors
According to the Southeast Strategy Update, city officials have faced challenges attracting national retailers to the southeast part of town, so efforts to attract more local businesses have been put in motion. One of these efforts is the redevelopment of Pontiac Street, the northern border of the neighborhood, into a pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use street. Several blocks have been completed as part of the initial phase, and upgrades to several more are under way as part of the second phase. Among the Oxford Community Association's recent projects was the conversion of a vacant lot adjacent to its headquarters into a small park with benches and space for pedestrians to rest.
Residents can stroll the newly improved business corridor and drop in for a bite at restaurants such as Los Carnales restaurant, which serves Mexican fare from a repurposed bungalow, or Bob Hawkins House of Fish, which stays open late with music. The recently built Pontiac Street Market makes quick work of filling the fridge, though on Saturday mornings during the spring and summer, residents can visit Southside Farmers Market for locally grown produce. Southside is Fort Wayne’s oldest, continually operated farmers' market and received a local historic designation in 2001. The market is a go-to for hand-crafted items, eggs, fresh baked goods, meats and more and is a popular gathering spot.

A neighborhood park at the core of the community
Set in the center of the neighborhood, Weisser Park attracts Oxford residents of all ages, from active to passive. Park visitors can use the playground, disc golf course, tennis and basketball courts, baseball and softball diamonds and natural open spaces. The grounds are also home to the Weisser Park Youth Center, from which after-school and summer programs are run. A library, computer room and study center are also part of the building. As part of a five-phase extension, The Hanna Street Trail will eventually connect from the west side of the park to downtown and Fort Wayne’s Six-Mile Creek Trail. Also in the neighborhood is the Euell A. Wilson Center, a religious-based non-profit that offers additional after-school youth programming.

Affordable homes with tons of potential
One of the goals of the revitalization efforts in the southeast is to support home values. “The city of Fort Wayne has put a lot of money towards resurging the market here,” says Holmes. Oxford is made up of house styles such as American Foursquares, bungalows and Tudor Revivals, which were built as the neighborhood grew between 1920 and 1950. Holmes notes this area is a handyman's haven. Fixer-uppers have gone for as little as $20,000, but a typical range for move-in ready properties is about $110,000 to about $170,000. “Oxford is extremely affordable compared to surrounding neighborhoods in Fort Wayne," Holmes says, adding that this makes the area ideal for first-time home buyers.

Students may attend one of several Fort Wayne Community School System pipelines depending on their address within the neighborhood. Students who start at Lincoln Elementary School, graded C-plus by Niche, advance to Shawnee Middle School, which is graded C, and Northrop High School, graded B-minus. At Northrop High School, students can take part in choir, dance and band as part of the school’s prospering arts program. “The diversity and arts programs in the local schools are factors that attract residents,” Holmes says. There is also an arts magnet school, Weisser Park Elementary School, right in the neighborhood; students are accepted via the district’s School Choice Lottery. The school is a STEAM school, which adds the arts to the typical program of science, technology, engineering and math studies. Weisser Park Elementary students can sign up for a variety of arts courses through their Encore Arts program and can participate in the school’s Robotics Team.
