Widening the streets, closing the gap
Pontiac Place is in the midst of a community makeover. It is among the established neighborhoods south of downtown Fort Wayne targeted by a nearly $3 million city initiative called the New Pontiac Streetscape. The first phase of the project was recently completed. It included the widening of Pontiac Street to make it more pedestrian-friendly and ADA accessible as well as the addition of more greenery. Reinvestment along Pontiac Street, which forms the north side of Pontiac Place, is intended to reactivate the long-dormant corridor. The infrastructure improvements were accompanied by a celebration to mark the opening of a new grocery store in an area that has long been a food desert. “They are literally revitalizing that area, bringing new life to it,” says MonTe Stevenson, associate broker for Anthony Realtors. “It’s a growing area that attracts first-time homebuyers and investors. It’s reforming; that’s the best word for it.”
Attractively priced established housing
A collection of established housing built primarily in the 1920s and ‘30s populates the neighborhood’s walkable streets. American Foursquares, with their noticeable dormers and large, welcoming porches stand out among the many multi-level homes. Smaller homes in understated pre-war architectural styles and cozy Cape Cods also can be found. Prices typically range from the high $60,000s to the mid-$100,000s.

Minutes from downtown and its attractions
Public transportation is readily available at bus stops along Oxford Street just south of the neighborhood. Both Oxford Street and Pontiac Street lead directly to U.S. Highway 27 about 2 miles west. From there, downtown Fort Wayne is 2 miles directly north. “The neighborhood is conveniently located,” says Stevenson. “You’re minutes from downtown, just a short bike ride or scooter ride to places like Parkview Field, and you’re also close to Electric Works.” Parkview Field is home of the city’s minor-league baseball team, the TinCaps, and has been recognized for its stadium experience several times since it opened in 2009. Electric Works is a contemporary multi-use development that is anchored by Union Street Market’s array of casual dining options.
High schools offer different strengths
The neighborhood’s younger students can attend Haley Elementary, a C-plus-rated school by Niche, and Lane Middle, a C-rated school. Both are rated A-plus for diversity. Older students can attend Snider High, a B-rated school known statewide for its sports teams and marching band, and Northrop High, a B-minus-rated school that offers performing arts classes in choir, visual arts and dance.

New grocery store anchors revitalization
Residents’ access to food got a big boost from the streetscape project’s anchor store, which also serves as a new community gathering place. “The Pontiac Street Market just opened,” says Stevenson. “It’s a 6,500-square-foot grocery store that has a sandwich counter and an area where you can sit down and chat.” The next-closest grocery store, Mi Tierra Supermarket, is located a little more than a mile away, as the crow flies, but access is limited by railroad tracks that separate Pontiac Place from many of the neighborhoods to the north. Other nearby dining options include Los Tacos Paco, a popular neighborhood eatery on Pontiac Street that serves up authentic specialties seven days a week. The closest retail store is a Walmart Supercenter located several miles south of the neighborhood.

Proximity to a popular park and community center
Residents do have a large recreational complex within walking distance of the neighborhood. McMillen Park’s main attraction is an 18-hole public golf course. “McMillen Park is fantastic,” says Jack Fitzgerald, a Realtor with eXp Realty, LLC who grew up in Fort Wayne. “I love playing golf there.” Further amenities include a colorful playground and even more colorful basketball courts. In addition, indoor courts for basketball, soccer and fitness activities are available at the park’s community center. Youth programs and adult sports leagues are offered year-round at the center, which also hosts community events ranging from vaccination clinics and health fairs to an annual Harvest Festival in late October.
